Yesterday I got the new issue--a beautiful article by a proud breastfeeding mama to a 5 year old with (mostly) supportive "scientific" sidebars--check it out!

I thought they were pretty mainstream as well. It'll be neat, next issue, to see what kind of letters they get in response. Oh--I'm not sure about a link! Maybe Parents.com?

Someone posted the following on another board I post on. It was originally posted on a yahoo breastfeeding group by the author of the article.

Hi everyone,

I waited to let you know that I have an essay in this month's Parents Magazine. Called "I Still Nurse My 5-Year-Old," I am amazed that they printed it. It was an interesting process because they came to me to ask me to write it. It was quite a struggle, though, because they had very different notions of what I would write and many, many times, I was sure they were either going to kill the story or find another writer. Anyway, after months and months of back and forth, we finished the piece and it is in the June issue.

You can read it at: http://platypusmedia.com/documents/stillnurse.htm

Also, Jeannette Crenshaw, Katy Lebbing, Martin Drell, William Carey and Ruth Lawrence all provided comments for the sidebar -- thanks everyone!

If you get inspired, write the editors and let them know that it is nice to hear some alternative views of breastfeeding. You can send letters from: http://www.parents.com/submit_form/tell_us.jsp

Take care,

Well, I never thought I'd see the day! I had a subscription to Parents magazine, as I think most every unsuspecting new mother does at some point, and it finally ran out. They just sent me a card begging me to come back for $5.99 a year- what a ridiculously low price! I told DP it was worth it "to keep tabs on the enemy." But after reading the link, I sent them a letter of praise. I hope they'll print more stuff like this.

I had heard there was an article about extended BFing in Parents, but hadn't had the chance to read it since I don't subscribe. Thanks for the link! I will definitely write a letter to the editor with my support!

This is fabulous news! I wrote them a letter of praise as well--it's easy to do from the link Masih Mama gave. Let's inundate them with letters! :LOL

After sitting down and thinking about it for a good long while, I finally wrote Parents magazine a letter to the editor thanking them for including such an article. I made it as eloquent and educated as I could. Three minutes later, it was returned undeliverable to my email account saying [email protected] was not a valid email address. And I had used the link above, too. Anyone else have a problem submitting feedback?

Yay for Dia Michels! Finally there's something worth reading in Parents magazine!

For those of you who don't know, the author of the article, Dia Michels, is the author of "Milk, Money and Madness" as well as other breastfeeding books...and some really good children's books. I met and spoke with her at the CT LLL Conference...she's a great speaker and very friendly! I'm so glad Parents asked her to write the article...and printed it!

I went to their website, clicked on "Contact Us" and submitted my response to the article that way without a problem.

Hmmm....maybe I should write and send them an article about triandem nursing ... :LOL ... somehow I don't think that would make it in!

Yeah, I had clicked on the conact link. I had to put in my email address, as I wasn't emailing from my account but from their website. Pook. I really wanted to put in a possitive word...
