The whole end of my 4 month old's finger is very red. I don't know if I maybe clipped it a little when trimming his nails a couple days ago or not. I usually do it when he is asleep because he is so squirmy but I risked it and did it while he was awake because he was scratching his cradle cap.

Should I do anything? Or just watch it for a few days? How do I know if it is infected?

I don't really have a lot of advice, but wanted to BUMP.

Redness is a sign of infection. Maybe call his doc? Is it hurting him at all?

Check to see if there is a hair of any kind wrapped around it, I've seen that happen to babies.

If not, just keep it clean, try not to worry, if it gets better no big deal if it gets worse, call a care provider.

DS gets infected fingertips after I trim his nails on occasion. I'll give him a nice warm bath and then give his finger a quick soak in some hydrogen peroxide - it usually clears it up by morning.

That's happened to DS's fingertips occassionally. I'm pretty sure I accidentally clip one here and there when cutting his nails. Just keep your eye on it - my DS's has always healed itself after 2 or 3 days. The magical healing powers of babies!

Ditto on keeping a close eye on it. if it doesn't heal in a few days or appears to be getting worse it would probably be a good idea to have it checked. Nail clippers are not very clean usually, nor are babies fingers!!

Also, look for swelling, pain, and red streaks away from it, and general 'bleh' from your babe - he'll let you know if something hurts or is wrong.

You can also soak it in some warm soapy water a few times a day and see if that helps - it doesn't have to be antibacterial. Just use whatever soap you'd normally use on him, and follow up with a wee bit of breastmilk (seriously. the stuff is miracle goo). Heck, I'm not even sure the soap is necessary, but I used it when my DS ripped a bit of nail off and I was worried about how red and angry it was.

I soaked it in a little bit of warm salt water and it seems to have helped it some. I think it was more swollen and puffy around the side of it last night than it is this morning and it looks a bit less red. When I touched it, he acted like he didn't even notice so I don't think it is hurting yet. He chews on his fingers a lot so that may have contributed... I put a mitten on his hand in the night which he didn't like much!

Just as I was feeling better about it, I scratched his leg with my fingernail while changing him in the night. Changing always makes him cry but he really needed it and kicked out his legs right as my fingers were stretching his wrap around his leg. My nail made his leg bleed along the scratch and I don't even have fingernails. I always cut them way off but it was long enough to scratch I guess. It made me cry. My DH thought I was nuts but fingernail scratches are dirty and I hate inadvertently hurting my little man no matter how seemingly small. Ugh! First the clippers and then this.
