I've only ever used flannel, terry, and cotton knit. It's my impression that fleece (we are talking poly fleece, right? 'Cause if you mean cotton fleece, just ignore me!) would be too "smeary". You need your wipe fabric to have a bit of grab to it, and fleece just isn't grabby when it comes to poop! That's one of the reasons it makes such a good diaper liner - the poop doesn't stick too it very well.
I bought some wipes from a WAHM that I really liked. Then I made some just like them myself. They have flannel (cute prints, of course) on one side and cotton velour on the other. The ones I bought were serged around the edges. I don't have a serger, so I just zig-zagged around twice. They work great. I tried a poly fleece. The last poster was right, they didn't work well.
I purchased some velour-backed flannel wipes. I haven't used them yet, but I heard the velour doesn't do so well on the bum (just kind of smears it around) but is nice to use for face and hands. So I will be using flannel for the bum and velour for the face and hands (not at the same time, of course).
