Baby's blood type

1213 Views 16 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  Eggie
My dd wasn't tested for it when she was born at the hospital, I thought it was a routine but I'm glad they didn't took any of her precious blood
. So I know there are some "blood rules" and I cannot find any data about it now. I'm curious to know my dd's blood type. So if my dh is "O Rh +" and I'm "A Rh +" , does anyone know what my dd's is? or any links?

She could be A+, A-, O+, or O-. O is recessive and (-) is recessive. So, she'll get an o gene from your husband and either and A or o from you, because you could be AA or Ao. If she ends up with an A and an o she'll show as A; two o's will show as O. If you have a mixed genotype (Ao), she has a 50% chance of being A and 50% of being O; if your genotype is AA she'll definitely be A.

You and your husband could both have a (+) gene and a (-) gene, and the dominant one (+) is the one showing, so you could each give a (-) or a (+). The chances are 75% that she'll be rH +, assuming you and DH both have this mixed rH genotype. If either of you don't, she'll be rH+ for sure.

They didn't test Rain's blood at birth either, and I'm A+, while her dad is B-. My dad was also B-, so I know I'm Ao (+)(-), so if he dad is BB she could be anything except A (B, O, or AB, either + or -) and if he's Bo she could be absolutely anything...

Dar
Wow Dar that was very detailed!

I don't think there is any way to know for sure what your DD blood type is if you have two differant types.

I am O+ , DH is A+
our son is O+ like mommy and both the girls are A+ like daddy. Dominent genes I suppose.
If you really want to know you can get a home test. I know it means you have to prick your precious babe, but it isn't that bad. We got home tests to test myself, DH and DS. We follow the Eat Right for your type way of eating so really wanted to know. At least that way when you test them you can hold them and comfort them and it is a quick prick.
Moving this to Life With a Babe....
Interesting......

Both my children have my blood type O-

my daughters father is A+
my son's father is O+

I get a blood type done on my babies to determine if I need Rhogam or not.
Both are O - ? and what is your blood type?
Thanks for all your answers, this has being very educational.

Mine is O- as well as the two kids. They say the odds are against that happening.
Its like the whole eye color thing, both children have BLUE eyes, and I have green, my first husband had one blue and one green and my dh (father of DS) has brown eyes - I do believe the blue eyes come from my side of the family (my sister & father have them) But its really strange that both kids have blue. My daughter could have got them from her father, with his two different colors, but my son got blue from parents with green and brown - weird!
Ok ladies, how about this.....the mom is B+ and the dad is O+, can they produce an A+ baby?

It's really easy in my house... I am A+, dh is A+ and so are both of our kiddos

I sure hope this is a hypothetical question- otherwise I am about to enter dangerous territory....

No. If the mom is definitely B (we'll go w/ mom bc most pregnant moms have their blood typed) and the kid is A, then the father must be A or AB.

Reference the link I provided above. It has a calculator where you can plug in values.
momatheart23 mentioned the book Eat Right For your Type. This is a VERY interesting read if you want to learn more about blood types and what they mean.
Usually they type the cord blood at birth, even midwives do this. So just b/c baby wasn't pricked in the hospital doesn't mean they don't know her type. I'd call the ped who did her newborn exam and ask about it.

I'm Rh- so I have to know after my kids are born what their type is to determine if I want RhoGam or not. Both of mine have been + (Samuel is O+ and Atley is A+ like daddy), so I've had RhoGam twice.

No offense, whatsoever! My mom told me when I was 13 that she didn't think that my 'father' was my father...and told me about our blood type....so obviously........

Actually, where I work we only draw cord blood for typing if the mom is Rh neg or has type O. This is b/c these are the only types where the blood type is relevant (Rh neg to see if the mom needs Rhogam and O to know if there is a possiblity of ABO incompatiblity in the baby). And we don't stick the baby! You can type the blood from cord blood (we send a bit from the cord after it has been cut).
I called the hospital and they told me what Mom2six said, that it wasn't relevant so they didn't do it. So maybe I will try that home test, if I get enough courage to do it
: :LOL
