So, I have decided that my ammonia smell issues are more environmentally caused than caused by my wash routine. I've boiled and boiled. My DD2 is a heavy wetter, I use a Bummis wet bag for dirties, and our cabin is varied temp wise and it has caused our indoors to be a moist mold growing environment of late. We are working on combating that, but I think it contributes to the smell in my dipes. I'm thinking about airing them out instead of using a wet bag. I'm also thinking of getting Bac-Out. My questions are:
Can I use that instead of boiling so much?
Will it last a while, or will I have to order once a month? (Off-grid living with no UPS service and a P.O. Box)
Does it wear the diapers out?
Will it be worth it price wise? We are on a limited budget... very limited, no extras.

i have a 2 yr old, wash one huge wash at the laundromat once a week, and use a good sized squirt per load. this small bottle i have has lasted me a couple months, i probably have 2 loads left in it. i dont know if you can order a larger bottle. this one is small. i like it and think it makes a difference, personally.

Hi,

I wash dipes every other day. I rinse out all dipes prior to putting them in an open dry bucket and I liberally spray poopies and sometimes overnight dipes w/bac out. I also soak dipes overnight in 1/3c of bac out and just enough water to saturate dipes prior to washing them the next morning. I use soapnuts as my "deterg" Sometimes I just dump about 2 cups of baking soda on the dipes between wash days. I think a combo of baking soda and bac out can keep $$ down. BUT I use quite a bit more baking soda than the recommended amt! I buy bac-out in bulk from amazon....and it LASTS!! Bac-out has not damaged my dd's dipes. They are cotton and hemp fitteds.

The only thing you have to consider is that it is VERY important to wash all the bac-out out w/HOT water. You didn't say what facilities are available for washing. Do you use a laundromat?

No.

Didn't get rid of my ammonia stink. I was told I need Calgon to soften my water and a better detergent that rinses clean, and to use plenty of said detergent. Planet and Charlie's Soap seemed to be the most recommended.

We have well water that has a touch of sulfur/iron in it. I'm thinking I might quit using the wet bag and do an open pail. I also might try putting the baking soda in the pail. Never thought of rinsing out the pee dipes. Might do that too. Thanks!
