My DD is almost 10mo and weighs 19lb. I wear her a lot in the Maya and I would really like to try the back carry. I watched the instruction DVD and it looks pretty difficult.

Has anyone done this? Is it comfy for baby and mom? Does it feel safe?

TIA

yep, I do it all the time. If your baby can sit securely on your hip, you can do it. I like the rings to end up in the regular place, so if I'm planning the back carry (as opposed to sliding babe around out of spontaneous necessity), I put the rings behind my shoulder, then put the baby in on my hip. Without tightening the fabric, i get it the way it needs to be around her body, with all the slack on the rings side. Then I slide her around to my back and tighten. Sometimes when she's already on my hip, I slide her around back and the rings end up lower. That's ok as long as nothing is smooshing your boobs. It might freak her out at first if she's not used to being back there. Try to take her outside and make it fun the first few times.

I have a Maya wrap knock-off sling which I frequently move DD around in (she's about the same weight, just a little older). Anyway, it takes some getting used to when you're learning how to sling her around to your back. The easiest way I've found is to put her on my hip, tighten the sling around us until she's snug (I tend to tighten the top "rail" a little more than what I normally would), and then kind of bounce her under my left arm (the rings on my right shoulder) and twist the entire sling counterclockwise on my body. She enjoys the slight bouncing and stays tight on me. The sling doesn't give much, just keep an eye on the tightness and continue to tighten as needed if it slips (which won't be much at all, if any). She enjoys riding on my back when I'm wearing jeans 'cause then she can stick her toes in my pockets and hoist herself around too! It is an awesome carry position!

How do you get the fabric all spread out like that? I can get Ilyas on my back, (by sliding him around) but then the fabric on his back is all bunched up. I can never get it to spread out farther than the middle of his back. I wonder what I'm doing wrong?

BTW, thanks for the pics!

I start with her in a cuddle carry posistion if I know I want her on my back. I spread all the fabric out and then slide her around to my back. At this point the rings are just to the side of my boob and I spread it out evenly so even though its 'smooshing' it, it doesnt hurt or cause any problems there. Next I spread the fabric way out on my shoulder and as long as the fabric is all spread out and I start with a good spread in cuddle carry I'm good to go. I like the rings placed there as well because it covers some of my baby pouch left over from over a year ago, lol. It is super comfy too! I found a sling with aluminum rings is more comfy for these carries because the rings tend not to dig in as much. If this is an issue with your Maya use the tail to wrap around the rings once to help. heres another back carry pic but this is for smaller babes: http://www.thebabyspace.net/photos/backcarry.jpg Goodluck!
