Hi,

I've had these symptoms: really strong odor in my vagina along with white discharge (seen on the dark panties that I wear). I am 18 weeks along.

I spoke to my OB and she didn't seem that concerned, said it is typical to have a pungent vagina during pregnancy along with more discharge. She asked if I had problems peeing and I said no. Sometimes I pee a lot in terms of quantity, sometimes I don't.

How do I know it's not Bacterial vaginosis? I had the standard pap smear at 9 weeks, a urine sample given in a lab at 12 weeks and the standard "pee in a cup" tests last week.

I am curious if I should push her to do more testing, or just start the garlic suppository or the hydrogen peroxide douche.

Does anyone have more specific details about the garlic suppository?

thanks!

Is it painful? If it isn't painful and your OB says it's normal, I'd tend to agree with her. Lots of weird vaginal output happen during my pregnancies, all normal. If you are specifically concerned about bacterial vaginosis, make an appointment with your doctor and tell her you want her to test for it.

I would DEFINITELY avoid douching, and probably avoid the suppository also, unless specifically directed to do so by a doctor. When pregnant, the rules change as to what is safe to put in your vagina. If you think your doctor is wrong to tell you that it's normal, perhaps you should see another doctor and get their advice as well, so you have two knowledgable opinions to take into account.

Good luck!

When I was diagnosed with BV, it was through a regular pap test, so I would assume if you had it, they would have found it.

I've wondered the same thing, but my discharge isn't too unusual. Just a gross smell. I think its' a normal pregnancy thing.

i get BV while preg. i was told the smell is normal. no it wasnt. if you can smell it and it really bothers you then it is probably BV. i usually take clindamycin for it. i wouldnt do douches or anything. a reg pap smear doesnt catch it. they have to specifically look for it. just a swab and under the scope. my doc didnt see it the first time i smelled it but saw it the second time when i insisted she look again.

yep! i don't think i had it in my 1st pregnancy, but i did lose my daughter to preterm labor at 22 weeks, not trying to scare you but because it can cause ptl and we don't know what caused mine...i will be getting screened for it this time around. it can be serious.

I absolutely agree you need to insist on a wet mount (the smear on a slide). BV isn't something to mess around with during pregnancy (well, or anytime, but especially during pregnancy!)

Don't do the douching or garlic suppositories. If you get tested for it, you should just take the antibiotics (and then some probiotics, orally, when the course of antibiotics is over.)

BV may very well have caused my preterm birth, too.
