Hi all!<br>
I'm trying to figure out if what I'm giving to DD is good enough to be considered a 'complete' diet. I'm a vegetarian but I'm not great with meal planning and cooking. DD is mostly on puree foods still, although she CAN eat foods like crackers, she flatly refuses to eat real foods like veggies and fruit unless its pureed. She'll eat an apple [not cut up, only bites from my apple] but NO bananas. She's so incredibly picky I just don't know how to add more to her diet to expand it, she just keeps refusing anything else. Here is a typical day:<br><br>
Breakfast - oatmeal with ground flax and cinnimon, rice milk with liquid vitamin mixed in<br>
Snack - puree fruit and/or rice crackers/chedder bunnies<br>
Lunch - Puree veg [maybe a puree lentil if we are at home] and puree fruit [i jar each<br>
Snack - Whole milk yougart with puree fruit mixed in or crackers/bread plain<br>
Dinner - puree mixed veg [maybe with avocado mixed in], fruit<br>
Before bed snack [if she wants] cereal [milupa type]<br><br>
Of course breastmilk MANY times througout the day, like eveyr 2 hours or so depending. I just feel like she is missing something because there is no meat but I'm not sure how to balance a vegetarian toddler diet with one so picky!!!<br><br>
Any other moms of veggie toddlers? What do you feed your DC???<br><br>

My dd is 15 months old. We are near-vegan, she is a vegetarian. Here's a typical meal schedule for her.<br><br>
Breakfast: "cereal" consisting of ground and cooked whole grains and beans with two pureed orange veggie cubes and two pureed green veggie cubes. The grains and beans get ground every couple of weeks, and cooked twice a week. I use a mix of rice, barley, quinoa, millet, oats, navy beans, lentils, kidney beans, and garbanzos.<br><br>
Snack: Fruit. Pears, bananas, strawberries, kiwi or whatever happens to be ripe. If we have no ripe fruit in the house, then I give her rinsed canned mandarin oranges, or frozen fruit like peaches, pineapple or strawberries. She also has a sippy cup of milk, which is usually half og whole milk and half soymilk.<br><br>
Lunch: If we're having lentil or minestrone soup, then she usually has some too. Otherwise, I'll make her a nut butter & jelly sandwich (raw almond or sunflower seeds).<br><br>
Afternoon snack: same as morning snack. Fruit & milk.<br><br>
Dinner: same as breakfast, only usually smaller (cereal with one orange cube and one green cube). I'd like her to eat what we do, but my DH doesn't get home from work early enough for that. I might also give her a hard boiled egg or some more fruit if she's still hungry.<br><br><br>
Looks to me like your daughter's diet isn't bad. Is your only concern all the pureeing? What if you cut up some banana (or any fruit) 'for yourself' and let her have bites? Food is always better when it's mama's food. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/wink1.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="wink1"> That might help her to get used to it.<br><br>
If your daughter wasn't BFing so often, I'd say protein might be an issue. You could try to grind some dried beans (navy's are pretty mild) and mix it in with the oatmeal.

Depending on her weight, she really doesn't need a whole lot of protein.<br>
The RDA is 0.8 g-1 g protein/kg body weight, so a 22 lb toddler (I am just guessing at your DD's weight) would only need about 8-10 g of protein per day!<br><br>
Your daughter's diet sounds AWESOME! Look at all the veggies she is eating!<br>
Maybe you can slowly introduce chunkier foods, like puree half and then have some bigger chunks mixed in.<br><br>
Does she do any finger foods at all? Like string cheese?

Sounds like you're doing good. Here is what DD had todayL<br>
BF: whole wheat toast. 1/2 banana. soymilk.<br>
Snack: grated carrots<br>
Lunch:dal<br>
Snack: 1/2 banana. Dry cereal<br>
Dinner: split pea soup 1/2 whole wheat toast. soymilk.<br>
And of course nurses in beween.

We are vegetarian -- a few things that DS really likes that I didn't see you mention:<br>
* scrambled eggs<br>
* tofu (can be pureed and added to any pureed veggies, soups, etc)<br>
* baked beans, black beans -- maybe pureed black bean soup?<br>
* tomato and lentil dahl<br>
* grated cheese -- DS likes chunk cheese too, but he really gets a kick out of grated cheese<br>
* ice cream -- the brand we buy has almost exactly the same nutrition information as DS's yogurt (I was really surprised when I checked the label)

My dd LOVEs refried beans. I make my own. When i heat them up to serve I usually toss in some finely chopped cooked veggies like brocolli, carrots, zuchinni, peas, etc.... In a real time crunch I can just toss in some organic frozen mixed veggies with hot beans and the beans defrost the veggies while the veggies cool down the beans. Then she gets to use it as "dip" for ww tortilla or sliced cucumbers.<br><br>
I still puree a lot of foods. Dd does not like big chunks of veggies in soups and stews so I usually puree hers and put it in a mug with some ww bread to dip. I will continue to do it as long as she likes it that way....even if she is 12 <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/smile.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="smile">

wow- you are doing tons better than me. My "baby" is almost three. On a typical day she has:<br><br>
an egg and toast for breakfast or cereal and milk or a bagle with butter<br>
apple for snack<br>
PB&J for lunch<br>
supper: speghetti an a bread stick.<br>
snack: carrot sticks.

We are vegetarians but my kids have never been particularly picky eaters. However, I have encountered my own worries about DS, who eats large quantities of food and continued to be hungry. Here are some reassuring things I found out after a conversation with a nutritionist:<br><br>
If you toddler is still nursing- even as little as 2-3 times per day, it doesn’t matter so much what they eat. If you provide a selection of healthy foods they will eat a balance of foods over a period of time- even if they seem to get stuck on one food group in particular. In addition to offering a little extra protein, you might want to try some additional healthy fats. Add oils to foods before serving (and do not cook them) for maximum benefit. Also- smoothies are a super good way to get some extra nutrition in- you can throw in whatever you think DC might be lacking for the day.

Thanks for all the helpful replies! I'm glad to see that her diet is mostly good, her weight certinaly is! She is about 25 pounds. I'm going to try adding beans and oils to foods, what a good idea <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/orngbiggrin.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="orange big grin">. I'd love to give her cheese but she can only stomach yoguart, no cows milk or cheese. I'm going to try goats milk and see if she has a reaction.<br><br>

To add to the 'oils' part... My family drinks "Silk Enhanced" which is creamier than most soy milks are, because it has flax seed oils added.<br><br>
That's interesting that she can do yogurt, but that's it for dairy. Huh. Any idea why?

Thanks, i'll check to see if we have that brand here. I"m not sure exactly why but from what I've heard the process that makes yogurt into yogurt actually changes the composition of the dairy and the protein that is not digestible either is gone or lessens. Sorry to be so vague but I'm not really sure, I'll look into it and see if i can find more info <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/orngbiggrin.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="orange big grin">
