After an internal review found trace amounts of benzene in Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Sunscreen Spray SPF 30, Edgewell Personal Care is pulling it off the shelves.

The chemical is a known carcinogen, and Edgwell Personal Care, the maker of the sunscreen, said that the review revealed unexpected levels that came from the propellant that sprays the product from the can.

The affected lots include:
  • Lot Code 20016AF, expiration December 2022.
  • Lot Code 20084BF, expiration February 2023.
  • Lot Code 21139AF, expiration April 2024.

Edgewell Personal Care recommends customers stop using the spray immediately and throw it away. They are offering reimbursements for customers who have sprays that are part of the recall.

Benzene is a human carcinogen, and can possibly lead to blood disorders like leukemia. Though there haven't been any 'adverse events' reported that are related to the sunscreen, benzene is a volatile chemical compound and health experts are concerned that benzene-contaminated sunscreens pose risk for unintentional absorption over time.
