BW wrote in to today's NYPost. She said:
1) That she never said breast feeding was "gross and disgusting" (I think that was Star Jones
)
2) That she is very supportive of breastfeeding: case in point: her senior producer has been bringing her son to the office for a year to breastfeed "and she is encouraged to do so"
3) Elisabeth H. hasn't given up nursing, just supplements now
4) She was not flying first class but "on a crowded shuttle , with three seats in the row" and the mother was across the aisle

All of the above might be well and good...until...
"Heaven know, we weren't against the woman breastfeeding her baby. We only suggested perhaps a bit of modesty. I truly regret that is caused discomfort to some women."

The idea of "modesty" makes me want to tear my eyes out, particularly when you're talking about a woman who puts Star "Booberella" Jones on TV 5 days a week. Which reminds me: one thing that's bugged me about the whole View fallout is that BW, rather than Star, seems to be getting all the attention--when really, in my mind, Star's comments were far more offensive and damaging (breastfeeding is "gross"; formula is "just as good these days").

I think Star gets away with too much..........she stinks in so many ways.

I hate using or hearing the term modesty when bf is spoken of...........

I was grocery shopping 2 wks ago (sorry nak now typos) and a family of 4 were shopping and mom had newborn nursing walking with it in arms and her entire stomach stretchmarks and all were hanging out, boob too...funny because it took me a moment to grasp seeing it and *I* am a seasoned nursinh mama in public too.........but then I thought good for her! Screw modesty when you need to feed just do the deed! :LOL

Maybe we've not jumped on Star the same way because we don't expect the same level of intelligence from her.
BW has always been a woman of intelligence and poise and a feminist. I expect feminists to support other women.

This was my concern too, I thought it was about the whole view they have on breastfeeding in general.

amarasmom - TOTALLY!

I think Elizabeth is feeling alot of pressure. I actually feel sorry for her. She knows in her heart the bf is the right choice but I think her family, friends and ummm..co-workers are influencing her judgment. I don't think she knew how big of a decsion this was.
Now she can say she did both, and she's safe.

I thought BW was getting all the attention because she was sort of claiming it, and making it all about her. Amarasmom, I think you are right on the money. I don't watch the show, but from what I have heard they are ignorant about breastfeeding. Remember that whole "I was attacked by La Leche League Leaders" fiasco?

this is what I emailed my friends:

Barbara Walters responds to Michelle Malkin's article.
She says she never said that breastfeeding is "gross and disgusting" (but Star Jones did - not mentioned here, tho).

She suggests that the woman breastfeeding should be more more modest and cover up.

Here is where Barbara Walters has totally missed the point of the Nurse-In and the outcry over what the women on The View are saying;

the point is that a mother should be able to breastfeed in public without having to worry about modesty.

There is nothing immodest about nurturing your baby at the breast.

(my soapbox, incredibly, continues!)

Through this entire episode that is what has surprised me the most. I can't for the life of me understand how assertive successful women (presumably to some degree "feminist") can NOT support breastfeeding in general and nursing in public specifically. If their stance is based in ignorance, how do they maintain it in the face of the truth?

And, why do some continue to insist there is a middle ground "just a little bit of modesty..." when they would never accept this in other circumstances. "I don't mind women in the workplace, I think its great, but they should not try to hard to be aggressive like men, yk?" - or - "Women should definately be allowed to have their own lines of credit, but what's so hard about having a responsible husband/father/brother help set it up?" kind of thinking.

Public modesty is an entirely separate issue from breastfeeding!!

Color me confused.

Did Barbara Walters even read the article? She completely missed the point and just admitted to what she was being accused of. Malkin's point was NO woman should be made to feel ashamed of nurturing her baby. And when you say, "oh, she should just practice some modesty.." WTF? That is shaming someone.

And from what I read she was wearing a baggy t-shirt...is she supposed to pitch a tent over her chair? How much more modest does it get, good grief.

I have lost all respect for that woman.

I've lost all respect for her as well. Mark me down as another one that is really shocked by women that consider themselves "feminists" taking this modesty stand.

At least she's realized the whole "it wasn't me it was the guy next to me" argument isn't working! She did COMPLETELY miss the point though, and that's sad. I always thought she was more intelligent then that.

:LOL Priceless! :LOL I can tell you that it's really hard with huge breasts to not flash some boob. But I can guarantee that you see less of my breastfeeding boob than you do half the people on tv. Anyone watch Survivor?

Star "Booberella" Jones

:

Barbara and Star are partners in crime- but Star is by far the worst of the 2- I would rather hear the Barbara's comments about "modesty" anyday than hear Star's "breastfeeding is just gross, don't they still make similac?" comments...

still...I just don't get it- I show less skin nursing than Star shows everyday on TV!
