my dd has going pee and poo on the potty down, but it's when we are home and nakie. When we are out she is sporadic about letting me know about going potty, but does a pretty good job of going on the "big" potty while hold her.

My questions are:
~how does this transition into being fully potty learned? Like do I wait until she tells me every time that she needs to go before I let go of the diapers? Or is there something else I should be doing?

~do you just go straight to underwear or use trainers? I see so many posts about trainers when I'm checking the CD forum here and at diaperswappers, but it seems like everyone I know just put their kids in undies one day. I mean is it different for different kids or is it the technique the parent is using?

~if you use a little potty, how/when do they end up using the regular toilet?

~lastly, I guess it's not really a potty learning question, but do those tp roll locks work? I never want to pull out tp from the toilet again like I did last night

We use a toilet lid thingy. Its small and fits on top of big potty. It is also very easy to take around with you. I bought this one: www.flipandflush.com

I LOVE IT

Also. I just kept ds in undies all day. At night I use pull ups, but in the day its all undies. I wait for him to pee before I go anywhere, and I dont stay out longer than an hour. I take the potty lid with me everywhere I go, just in case. We have been potty learning for 2 weeks now, and he goes on his own, without us even mentioning it. No accidents now!!

Here are my answers, based on my daughter:

Until they are reliably staying dry without being prompted, you ask them if they need to go every 20 minutes or so and/or before you leave the house or the restaurant or what have you. A lot of kids need prompting to think about their bodies' signals. Her job at first is just to make an effort to eliminate in the potty or toilet -- not to remember on her own that she needs to go there.

IMO, it's how far along they are. If she's having tons of accidents, trainers make your life easier. If she's mostly making it to the potty, use undies.

We switched to a ring on the toilet, which made her feel more secure, and a stepstool to reach it. Then when she felt comfortable without it, we took it off. The toilet ring made my life SO much better than the little potty! She stopped using the little potty when she was about 2 1/2, and not yet completely trained.
