My son is seven weeks old today. He has had three baths so far. Is this okay? He doesn't drool or spit-up much, the only thing I can think of as a reason to bathe him more often is because he does still poop several times a day. He used to get some crustiness around one eye, but we cleaned his face with a wet washcloth and these days his eye has cleared up.

Anyway, are we bathing him enough? If it matters, and I suspect it doesn't, he is uncircumcised.

Thanks!

Edit: By "three baths so far," I mean since he was born. Not three baths today. His last bath was last weekend, I think.

I don't know if the circ issue matters or not but I very rarely bath my babies. I think my 4 month old has been in the tub about 6 times. She isn't dirty and doesn't smell except her breastmilk breath. Once she starts eating solids and moving around, then the baths will increase.

Being intact doesn't matter at all, cleaning-wise. An intact penis doesn't need any special care, and remember to never retract the foreskin! Just clean it like a finger.

Anyway, my son didn't have many baths in the beginning either - I think he was at least a week old before his first sponge-bath and several weeks before he got in the tub with me. I did notice around 6 weeks that he started having a foot cheese smell between his toes, though! He got a bath that day, for sure.

Babies don't really need many baths. I think it tends to dry out the skin, and it's not like they have BO or anything.

We didn't really do baths until Lina started having more fun with seeing things float in the bathtub. And then we discovered that she loves showering in the pouch AND it clears up her nose, so her one cold in life started a near daily shower routine for us.

If he doesn't stink, he doesn't need a bath. And even if he does stink, a wet washcloth'll do just as well unless he likes baths.

I have bathed DD2 much less than I did DD1. I've come to realize in dealing with DD1's eczema that they really don't need bathed as much as we do. When DD2 was that small, she'd mostly get wiped under the neck and her diaper area with a warm washcloth and that's it. Now, she gets a bath once every 3-4 days as her hair gets food in it and she has her hands in everything all the time. I think you are doing fine mama. If he stinks of sour milk, or diaper smells then it's bath time. Other than that, I think a wet washrag to the trouble areas daily will keep a baby clean.

My ds is 4wks and has had maybe 3 baths. I actually just realized this last night and was thinking maybe we should bathe him again.
Glad to hear others are not bathing so frequently either. He certainly doesn't seem dirty. My dd got more baths but I just had more time then!

DD had a bath on the day she was born, but that was a comfort/soak. Although I did clean the blood out of her hair.

Then, she got a bath for Christmas, a bath for her 2 month photos and a bath for Valentine's day.

Now she takes more regular baths, as she is sitting up/crawling, baths have become a playground for her. Before, I didn't do it b/c of the cold weather, DH's schedule (I have sports injuries/can't lean over the bath) and she haated them.

I did make sure to give her regular towel baths!

I feel weird reading these responses, as bathing my daughter every other night is a ritual here and has been for about six weeks (she's 9 weeks now). She loves it, my husband and I love it, and it's a part of what little bedtime "routine" we have. She'll always fall asleep during her first post-bath nursing (when that is varies depending on her mood!) and sleep for a solid 5 hours. We have so much fun splashing water around in the tub, cleaning her chubby belly and arms and whatnot

We bathe about twice a week and very rarely we use soap. We have a chunker here(24# at 5 months) so there is lots of rolls that get a little funky or else would we bathe less. Just water and a washcloth does the job. Like op, do if you need to.

We haven't bathed DS (almost two weeks old) yet, and he doesn't really need it. However, like some of the previous posters, we started bathing DD (almost 2 now) nightly or almost-nightly as part of her bedtime routine when she was maybe 2-3 months old. We'll probably do the same with DS if he likes it. We'd bring her in the tub with one of us, she loved it, and it helped provide a regular routine/ritual pre-bedtime. She still loves her baths, and still gets one almost every night just before bed (now, as a dirt-loving toddler, they're more necessary!). I might not do it if there were skin or eczema issues, and we rarely used soap, but I did really like the ritual.

I rarely bathed DD, as a babe...a gentle wipe down was that she needed. When she did take a bath, DH and I would have her join us in the tub or shower (we still do this). As a toddler, DD really enjoys splashing around in the tub or shower (so, she bathes more often). But, we only use a gentle cleanser on her hair once every week or two.
