My older 3 (8, 6, and 4) are out of control with the burping, farting, and general joking about said processes. So far they have kept it to only at home, not being that way in public. However, I am so tired of it. I have tried to impress in the past that it is impolite to do those things at the table. And that if they feel the need to pass gas (out either end) that they should step into a restroom first if possible. If something slips, and that's the only time others should have to be subjected to it, that they should say, "Excuse me."

DH and I don't do these things in front of each other nor the DC, so it is not as if they are learning by example. We understand it is just this stage. But, the DC just will NOT stop. As I type they are jumping around, trying to 'shake loose' farts, yelling "Bombs away!" and ripping them. Despite the snow, I am forced to open the window due to the smell. When out of farts, they move on to gulping air for those long, drawn out burps.

Anything that is said by anyone in the family is turned around to mean something about gas. As an example, 4yo just said, "Mommy, it really cold with the window open." I responded, "Yes. It is. And unfortunately we are having to re-heat the house due to the cold air coming in." (They know full well why I've opened the window) Now there is uproarious frivolity about "re-HEATing the house" as DD had made a joke a year or so ago about her farts being her seat warmer in the car. *sigh*

Help. I am so tired of the stink and disgusting sounds. I am trying not to make a huge deal out of it as I know that will fuel the fire. I've considered "if you can't beat them, join them", but I'm just not that into bathroom humor and gross sounds/smells. Ignoring it isn't working.

They have even gotten to the point where they will on occassion urinate in their pants in the effort to pass gas.

Calgon, take me away.......

I'm still giggling. I would love to be at your house. It sounds terribly fun. This too shall pass (pun intended) in time. I say, if you can't beat em join em. They'll really dig you for it someday....

Wow, three of em joking away? My 5 yo ds finds these things quite amusing, but I dont know if I could take three of them all the time! Hugs, mama!
I say get a babysitter and go have some adult conversation. It wont change the kids, but you'll get a little relief.

LAUGH.

Congratulations, you have kids. Learn to relax and enjoy their childhood. This is a normal - and HEALTHY - part of growing up. It teaches them them about their bodies, a little about science (mix pop and eggs = :puke), about what is socially acceptable, and about thier limits.

Most college students still do that! (my DP's DAD still does it )

Hire a babysitter, eat a can of beans (or better yet, a carton of boiled eggs), drink a two liter, and gas 'em all out before heading out for a night on the town with your DP - just make sure you close the windows first!!

Tears are streaming down my face!!

Sorry you have to suffer to give everyone a good laugh. I remember times like that as some of my best childhood memories. It's how I learned what it felt like to have a really good (like until your stomach starts to cramp and you can't breathe) laugh. I'm sorry that your house stinks, but I still can't stop laughing

You are a great storyteller!

want2bmoms, I think that you had a great suggestion:
I had to go back and read it again... this is the part that REALLY gets me. I mean, the determination.... I guess I must really relate to that

I have to say though, seriously, if my mom had ever farted back at me, I would have been so thrilled that I think I'd still be trying to get her to do it again to this day.

I can just picture it...

My sister and I running around the house, straining to get out the gasses...
My mom standing at the sink doing dishes, sticks out her butt and lets one rip and flashes us a little smirk...

laughup there is no smiley that depicts how hard I am laughing...

Sorry for being no help at all but I'm really glad that your kids have so much happiness in their lives

Oh honey, I am right there with you. I live in a household of all boys. I have three boys and my hubby.

I don't know what to say. I have come to ignore alot of it.
Have you tried punishing? If they pass gas on purpose (not in the bathroom) they have to pay you?

If they burp (on purpose) after drinking soda or juice, say, "oh, that must make you have gas we better eliminate it until you stop".

Just a thought.

Mine our ages 2 1/2/ and almost 4. They like to spit. I have tried several things...now I just "bench them" they can't play until they stop. This seems to work the best.

Perhaps (and this is giving them the benefit of the doubt) some foods are making them gassy? Maybe eliminate those?
