Bed bugs!!!

we just moved into a high rise building in denver a few months ago (waiting on a house in the mountains) and before signing the lease, asked the landlord if there were bed bugs (read it on apartmentratings.com) and she said "NO, OF COURSE NOT", once we move in, we were all being bitten within a week. large welts and itchy bites and i even woke up to a bed bug crawling across my pillow. i've reported it to the landlord and they have sprayed 2x, the last bite we got was about a week ago, but i want OUT of this lease. my 2 yo does not deserve to live in this place and we are desperate to get out. anyone have good advice on how to legally break a lease??? i know this is a forum for health and not legal advice, but it has to do with healthy living conditions.....

Not sure about the lease, but i was in the same situation. I didnt bother telling the landlord because i know their "spray" wouldnt do anything. Throw out your mattresses. There is really no way around that. I threw mine away and "bombed" the apartment (with those cans you can get at walmart for bugs). I left for 24 hours, came back and all the bugs were dead. ugh they are disgusting....good luck
Unfortunately, throwing out the mattress is not an option since we can't afford a new one. What we did do was get a plastic mattress cover for it...haha.
yeah, i slept on an inflatable mattress/and or sleeping bags for a while. I counldnt stand the thought of sleeping on those blood sucking sickening bugs!
How horrible.
When you do break it make sure you don't inadvertantly take them with you (in a sofa for example).

I don't know about breaking the lease but....

I read somewhere on Mothering about a family that had their moving van heat treated when they moved. Its a super good idea. I wish we had known about that when we had them because we took them with us and they were hard to get rid of.

I've read that if you cover the mattress w/a plastic cover, make sure you use duct tape on the zipper and at the zipper ends... just in case they could get through if it wasn't totally sealed. Keep it on for at least 18 months. Also, do the box spring, too - very important!
