Classic Kanner Autism!

Just as I thought. It's nice to be validated. The doctor said my Floortime rocked too.

Now I reckon I should print up some of those autie acceptance cards, since we're official. Kerry can I use your wording? It was teh awesomest

A mother's instinct is truly an amazing thing, isn't it? Are you doing Floortime on your own? Are you using 'Engaging Autism' as your reference if so?

Yes, I'm using that and the Floortime DVD series as my how-to. I really like Floortime!

There's no difference, they are the same thing.

Well, saying good news seems innappropriate somehow, so I'll just say that you rock, you are an awesome mom and glad to hear the doc was spot on with you.

Kanner's Autism is the same as "classical" autism, whereas the term "just autism" can be somewhat ambigous, as there are 5 different subsets that fall under the category. For instance, I usually tell people who know nothing about ASC, that my dd has autism rather than pdd-nos, otherwise they'd have no idea what I was talking about.

It took about 2 months, but we squeaked in when she had a cancellation. Our original appointment was made in February and was for early September.

I don't think of him as 'having autism' as much as 'being autistic.' I was talking to my mom about that and we decided that feels as strange to us as saying someone 'has homosexuality.' I think of it as part of his Bede-ness. And I think I'm about as sorry about it as I would be if I had a homosexual child - because life can be really really hard for gay or lesbian people, yk? Above and beyond 'normal' hard life.

And it's hard for Bede too, in a very different way of course, but not tragic.

Not that anyone's called it tragic. Obviously I'm rambling!

I like Floortime because it evokes the child's self while completely respecting individuality. I also like RDI in a Floortime context.

I have Engaging Autism and have read quite a bit of it - I like what I've read. I've wanted to order the DVDs but they have been a bit price prohibitive. My husband is waiting on a raise to go through and I think I may order them then. I am also on a Floortime Yahoo group where I've learned a lot.

I'm glad you got your own instincts validated. Moms really do know, don't they?

I love floor time and RDI both!
