Personally we didn't. The books suggested are fun (haven't read them all though. My kids LOVE Madeline) but the lessons that go along with them just don't flow, IMO. I found my kids asked questions themselves and we just went from there. I can see it's benefit, though. It did spark some ideas for me but I just didn't like it as a curriculum.

we love it.... but we don't use it solely (although you could - i just don't do that with anything)... it's a lot of fun imho though & is really great to build upon. we really enjoy notebooking with it & specifically use it for science and social studies. we also use evan moor giant science book, draw write now, and let's read & find out about science series with it. HSS has page numbers and book recommendations to go along with each FIAR book. additionally, we love the fun with nature and more fun with nature books. i can't recommend the FIAR boards, HSS boards, and member blogs enough. i get most of my ideas from there
have fun!

Ditto the previous poster.

You can view my blog, and on the side are the FIAR books we rowed, by clicking on them you can see some of the fun activities we've done with FIAR.

In May I'm going to add a bit more in our homeschooling curriculum to have fun with history/geography and such.

We love it! I know that lots of people incorporate lapbooks and notebooks with great success. I prefer to teach conversationally. I go over the lesson while ds is doing independent work. Then we read the book and talk about the lesson.

Head on over to the FIAR boards. The mods, members, and board owners are very helpful. Jane Claire Lambert has several stickies posted on using the materials and getting started. Steve Lambert has also recorded a series of talks about homeschooling that are available as downloads.

My dh and I have been to a FIAR conference as well as a marriage retreat led by the Lamberts. They are wonderful people with a heart for ministering to other homeschoolers. They homeschooled their daughters back before homeschooling was widely accepted. I agree with their teaching philosophies and trust their advice.
