Our library had this book on display this week Before You Were Mine.

I love it. The boy speculates "Before you were mine, did you live in a warm house with a warm smells and a rug that was only yours?" Being that the dog came from a shelter, he speculates about some unfortunate situations too. "Before you were mine, were you kept on a chain with a dusty bowl and lonely sounds all around?" He tells the dog about his previous dog. "Before you were mine, we had another dog...." In the end, the most important thing is that this dog, his dog, is HOME.

I love how it gently guides the reader into speculation. It is so unusual to find a book that addresses the dog's point of view in this way. The illustrations are simple and clear and warm...I love picture books. I love dogs. I especially love shelter dogs. I am so happy to find this rare intersection of several of my favorite things!

Sounds like a cute book. We'll have to look for it. We just adopted a second dog about a week ago and we've already come up with lots of stories about where he came from
