Our family is in the researching stage, and this is where I hope you can help us.

I am also curious if there are any particular breeds you would recommend for a family with 3 young children (1 yr, 3 yrs, 5 yrs).

We live in a townhouse with a smallish, fenced, backyard.

I am a stay-at-home mom, so there will be lots of time to spend with a puppy, and my husband and I look forward to the time spent walking a dog.

Our 3-yr old is nervous around large dogs, due to a negative experience with a hyper black lab her grandparents own. She is fine around 'baby' dogs - puppies or small dogs, but takes time to warm up to others.

We also have an 8-yr old cat (a humane society adopted kitty who has been with us for over 7 years now), she is spayed.

We would definitely be interested in crate training, and likely clicker training as well.

Also - are there any particular brands of foods / toys / etc that you specifically recommend or recommend against using ?

I appreciate any information you can give us.

This is a decision we do not want to make lightly, as we know that bringing an animal into the family is a long-term commitment, and we want to make the best choice possible, not only for us, but for the dog as well.

Thank you so very much.

If you click on either link in my signature and then on "articles," there's one in there on choosing a breed.

Under "diet" info on raw food.

I generally recommend against going cheap--on food, treats, toys. You really do get what you pay for. Here are some sites for gear, books, etc.:

dogwise.com
sitstay.com
cleanrun.com (under "store" and "dog gear")
http://www.whitedogbone.com/ has the best beds

Website: yourpurebredpuppy.com is the ONLY breed selection site I recommend. Most others are just trying to sell you puppies.

Good luck! As you come up with specific questions, post them and I'll channel Shannon the best I can to answer them.

I'll be honest - I think I'm too squeamish to do raw foods.

I know that that's not going to be a popular response around here, but I'd be more comfortable using a good quality kibble, and possibly look at supplementing it with raw foods.

I'll check out the links though, thank you.

For high quality kibble, try Orijen, our pug was doing very poorly on raw since his severe underbite seems to prevent him from doing an major chewing, so we have put him or Orijen and I think its fantastic. Its also Canadian made!
