Does anyone know a website that will help me find belly dance lessons in my area? I tried the yellow pages with no luck.

Do you have an alternative paper in your area, maybe a "weekly voice" kind of place where the alternative health practioners advertise? That's where I've seen instructors listed in our area. (TN)

I just have to do some cut-&-pasting from my Favorites! I have been belly dancing since 1978, and am glad to hear about anyone interested in this form of dancing!!

Hold tight, and I'll be back shortly................

Okay, I'm back!

Here are a couple of places to get you started! The first one has EVERYTHING for belly dancing. It will amaze you. Plan on spending some time at your computer, it takes a huge amount of time to see all there is!

http://www.shira.net/links.htm#RegionLinks

The following are some teachers in Maryland. I found them at:

http://www.aliahscloset.com/default.asp

...which is a belly dance emporium in Portland, OR. Hope one of them is near you!

I KNOW there are several restaurants in the DC area that have belly dancers performing each week. Check the phone book. There are also a number of belly dancing troupes back east. Do you want me to check on them for you??

Let me know if you want more info. I have a LOT of sources bookmarked for all sorts of dance supplies and costumes. Prices range from low to omigod-am-I-really-ordering-that?!

I warn you, belly dancing is dangerous!

You start out thinking, oh, it sounds like a fun way to exercise, so different. Yeah, then you start. At first, you wear a leotard or low-slung sweat pants and a cut-off top. Then you make a practice skirt and veil. Hmmm, maybe a simple coin belt, just to add some sound. Wow, that sounds gooooood. A heavier belt would sound even better. But, can't have a better belt with just a simple skirt and that veil. Must find a skirt with a bit more zing (hmmm, what color looks good on ME?)! Oh, dear, what about a bra?? Make or buy?? Coin- or sequin-covered? Can't decided which color, better have two. But, then you'll need a different skirt to match or contrast that bra. Hey, what about harem pants? You'll find yourself listening to Middle Eastern music even when you are not dancing. You'll go straight to the International Music section of any music store. Feeling really wild? You'll start with finger cymbals. Do I keep my talent to myself, or should I branch out to public performances? What dance name will I use? Marketing, what about marketing? And, on and on and on and.........

Well, you get the picture

I speak from experience, as you can see. Fortunately, I married a man of Lebanese heritage, and HE loves all of it!! So, my sewing passion can be combined with me dancing passion, and a lot of fun keeps me going with it.

I took a very basic class a friend was teaching once. It was so much fun. The next day I started to feel how much work it really was. I plan on trying to start dancing on a regular basis once we get moved and I've had the baby. I need a form of exercise that is fun to do.
