I recently located a bellydance studio near my house, and I was wondering... How many of you use bellydancing as exercise? Is it effective? Does it target any part of the body besides the belly?
Is there any advice you could give to a novice bellydancer-wannabe? :LOL

Granted, I would take lessons just to know how to bellydance. I think it's really cool.

I started bellydancing as my "entree" into postpartum fitness. I liked that there are faster moves and slower moves, so you can get your heart pumping, or you can focus on muscle toning. There are some arm movements that work your upper arms, and you do have to stretch your body, too.

I also like the intangible of feeling capable in my body--which carried over into some of the other fitness efforts I have made recently.

And it is fun.

That's what I love about yoga! I was hoping it would be the same in bellydance.

Bellydancing is great exercise! I've been dancing for over 20 years, and it's kept my midsection and arms quite toned, plus it has given me great posture, which helps with all other sports and activities. When I'm very active in dance (teaching more than once a week, taking classes, troupe practice, personal practice, shows, etc.), it's enough to keep me fit, although these days I only dance about 2-3 times per week, so I supplement it with running, riding and yoga.

There is a bellydance tribe that is active every once in a while. There are a lot of good recommendations on that thread (it's the April thread, so it's a bit far back), especially about videos.

I have taught bellydance fitness before (focusing on dancers who wanted to improve their fitness levels for longer performances, stronger shimmies, floorwork, etc.) but I'd recommend a good basic course instead of a course that is marketed as bellydance fitness when you are learning. You'll still get a great workout, and a good foundation in dance as well. (My summer class starts on Tues
