I would also suggest a solarveil sling/pouch. Try hotslings.com or kangarookorner, or taylormadetreasures.com

they would also offer sun protection HTH

I have read that these are not designed for daily use... as the fabric is so light it has a tendency to slip through the rings.

I found some very open-weave (almost gauzey) plaid cotton fabric on the $1 table at walmart about a month ago. It makes a really nice sling. It was a small bolt--36" wide, I think, so I didn't even have to cut it, just hemmed and attached rings!

Seersucker is really nice, too. And I grab up all the athletic mesh I can find, because it is great for beach/pool/everyday. Make sure you use nylon rings--those metal ones are killer in AZ weather!!

(I'm from AZ--South of Tucson, and now I'm in Florida...out of the frying pan, and into the fire, LOL!)

ETA: Hmm, I kinda just assumed that you were looking for tips to make your own.
Are you looking for a hot-weather sling you can purchase? I think I have some links saved if you'd like me to post them....

I
my meash sling (made by SheBear) and use it almost daily! I also use my solarveil almost daily - both are nice and light-weight and cool. I use the solarveil when I know I'll be in full sun for a long period of time, and use my mesh when I won't be. The mesh sling is a little more comfy for ds because it's stretchy and much softer than the solarveil.

I'm also in AZ, and I've been using cotton slings. I find the padded ones to be way too hot. Well, really, when it's 110 degrees, EVERYTHING is too hot :LOL I like to use the tails of my unpadded ring slings as sunshades, just throw it over DC's head. I'm playing with pouches and mesh slings now, we'll see if they're better. Good luck with your move!
I tend to overheat easily, but my EllaRoo is still mostly comfortable. Welcome to Phx! In what part of the Valley will you be living?
I have always really loved using my maya pouch in really warm weather they are great with young babies too! I find my wraps to be too much when its really really warm..again alot of it is preferance.
I live in Phoenix, so I know what you mean!!! I have a solarveil sling from Sleeping Baby productions. I totally love it. It's a double layer of solarveil, so you get extra UV protection, but it's not hot!! I also have a cotton TaylorMade, but this is much cooler IMO. Good luck w/ your first summer in the Valley of the Sun!!!!

Another vote for a pouch. If heat is your main concern, then the least amount of fabric possible would be a good thing. Hotslings makes a Solarveil pouch that I bet would be perfect. You can also get mesh pouches at Milkface.
thanks for the advice everyone - so many choices! i think i definitely need something wiht nylon rings - even though i prefer the metal ones. i had to wrap the tail around the rings because dd likes to hold and chew on them and *I* burned myself putting it on!

phoenix mamas - i'm not sure exactly where i'll be living yet. there are a few places we're looking at!
I live in hawaii and its hot here year round. we dont have any airconditiong in our home as with many businesses and restaurants. I love my maya wrap. I have never had a problem with overheating baby or myself. We are both cool and comfortable in the maya wrap. The gutemalan cotton is very bretheable. I am currently slingin my almost 3 month old. But i did wear my 2 year old until i was 9 months pregnant in the maya wrap.
just my 2 cents.

another vote for a maya wrap or hotsling. i have both and live in phoenix and use them all the time. most places here are air conditioned, thankfully, but you still need something for when you are outside.
