My dd is almost 17 mo, and she still nurses a LOT, which is more or less fine with me. She nurses every 2 hours or so at night, which is not particularly fine with me, but it doesn't look like there's anything I can do about it right now, so I'm waiting that out.

But now that my AF is back, I'm having big supply problems for about a week every month. I never used to have to give her both sides during a feeding, and during that week I do. She ups her frequency and her duration of nursing, and she will make her "milk" sign WHILE nursing, which makes me think she's not getting as much as she wants. She eats more solids during this week, so I figure she's fine nutritionally.

BUT, nighttime is a problem. Last night she was nursing every 45 minutes, for long sessions, and nursing continuously starting at about 5. When I finally gave her to her dad at 5:45 AM, she fussed and fussed until he fed her, then she went right back to sleep!

She won't drink any kind of milk from a cup or a sippy. Should I try a sippy of nonhuman milk in the middle of the night (hoping when she's drowsy she won't care)? Should I try to wake her up and give her some dry cereal or fruit? I'm afraid she will get confused and not be able to get back to sleep. I feel just terrible that she's sleeping hungry all night.

Please tell me how you feed your hungry toddler at night!

(When I get frustrated, I think "shouldn't she be able to make it through the night without eating anyway?? She's 17 months old!" But that doesn't really get me anywhere, does it? sigh.)

I am right there with you with my 20 month old, so I don't really have any advice, just some commiseration. I am chronically sleep deprived (haven't slept for longer than 2 to 4 hours at a time in over 2 years - if you include the nighttime potty breaks in my 3rd trimester). It is really hard as it effects my mood and my memory. I keep saying to myself that this too shall pass, but it is getting harder as I thought we would be down to at least 2 or 3 times per night by now. Micah has the exact same pattern as your daughter (every 45 min. to 2 hours, occasionally 3 or 4, but progressively closer together until it is constant through until morning). I don't offer any other milks and have not offered food or anything as I, like you, was worried about him thinking nighttime is party time. Night weaning has crossed my mind, but he isn't ready for that yet.

So, as I said, no advice, but I will be taking notes!

Aww, hugs, mamas.

I am 14 weeks pg and was getting sore at the two-hour session my 18 mo DD would have from 4-6 am. She woke to nurse only 1-3 times before that, not quite every two hours. But I decided to limit her time. I started patting her back and humming while nursing, then continuing that when I unlatch her. somtimes it works, sometimes, it doesn't. But she's not nursing/latched on constantly for two hours at a time. She does nurse enough that when she doesn't wake to nurse until 4-5 (we got to bed 10ish) I feel full. So it's not just a comfort thing. But she has gotten to where she'll nurse a short bit and unlatch herself. Or I unlatch her and she won't roll over and go to sleep. So sometimes she is still nursing longer than I'd like. but less than she would be left to herself. That worked much better, BTW, than DH trying to soothe her. And she wouldn't take a bottle from either of us. I think a big part is finding what works to soothe your child besides nursing. But that doesn't address the hungry issue.

But what someone else told me which helped, it's a signal that you may need to change things, but you don't have to nightwean.

Hmm, for the hungries, do you do a bedtime snack? I really try to make sure DD gets something before bed, yogurt, cow's milk, raisins, cheese, carrots, oatmeal, something. I'm not really good at making sure it's protein, but I try to stay away from carbs that have nothing lasting in them.
