I'd love to try my hand at dying my own yarn. What is the best kind for that? And where do you find it? I like something soft too!

And while you're at it, if you have a good scheme for dying your own colorways, I'd love to know! I'd love to do something that has gradually changing colors, not just one solid color.

thanks!
I'm afraid I can't help with yarn suggestions as I spin my own yarns for dyeing. I use natural wools that have been minimally processed.

I have dyed though with changing colours and do it in the microwave. Basically I thoroughly wet the skein of yarn (that has been tied together in several places), place it on a sheet of plastic wrap (seran wrap), and drip liquid dye in several places with bands of undyed yarn in between colours. I wrap the whole thing up like a sushi roll. Place everything in a zip lock bag and zip up, leaving a 1 inch gap. Microwave for 2 mins, flip and microwave another 2 mins. Take out of bag and cool. Rinse till rinse water is clear and voila, dyed yarn that has colours merging together!

Its really cool when you mix colours like that because you can't always predict what colours come out.
