Hi Everyone. My name is Mary and I am with a group called MOMS, which stands for Making Our Milk Safe. MOMS was founded in the spring of 2005 by four nursing moms in response to the growing presence of toxic chemical in mother's milk. We are committed to breastfeeding and believe it is the best milk for babies--and we want to keep it that way!

We are co-sponsoring a bill in California right now that will ban toxic flame retardant chemicals for use in furniture and bedding. These chemicals have been found in American mother's milk at concentrations up to 40-fold those of women in Europe and Asia, and are linked to birth defects, cognitive and behavioral disorders, and reproductive harm.

We are planning a rally in Sacramento next Tuesday 5/22 in support of the bill. We know that the chemical company will have their lobbyists there in full force, and we want to have an equally strong presence. If any of you are in the Sacramento area and can join us at the rally, that would be fantastic.

You can view the bill fact sheet at http://www.safemilk.org/downloads/AB706_fact.pdf

If you can make it, let us know at [email protected] and we'll send you the details.
Thanks for listening!

Hey, all , just wanted to update details in case anyone can join us on Tuesday.

The rally/press conference will be held at the capitol on the N & 11th St. side of the building. We're going to gather at 10:30 and the event should start at 11AM. There is parking all around the building (11th & L, 10th, etc.).

I would love to grab lunch afterwards with the Mamas that can make it.

Please let me know if you're planning to come, so I can have a sense of the numbers. If we don't have enough folks, we'll have to call it off....which would be a big bummer. Especially since the folks fighting the ban on decaBDE are having a press event on the other side of the capitol the SAME DAY. :)

Thanks!! I you want more info, or have questions, please send me a PM. Thanks!!

I am an adoptive mama in the Sac area that bottle/FF feeds and I would love to attend this rally. However, I can't promise that my baby won't need to eat from a bottle with Similac during the process.

By the way, you should cross post on the CA finding your tribe board if you haven't already.

The Assemblyman's office is billing it as a "breastfeeding mom rally", but honestly, I think that we should all be concerned about toxic flame retardants because they end up in all of us.

If you can come, that would be GREAT!

Also, thank you for the cross-posting idea. I will do that!

How did this go? I'm sorry I wasn't able to make it. I was watching my friend's daughter and she didn't come get her until about noon.

The turnout wasn't as huge as I had hoped, but we definitely sent a message and got some great press. Here are some links to some of the great tv clips. I love the extended shots of our banner!!

KBAK

KCRA

I totally understand. I almost didn't even make it there! I had to run with my two and a half year old to a potty just minutes before the press conference and then carry her as I ran across the capitol to the event. Whew! At least we didn't have an accident.
