Bike Helmet Question

I know it must be too loose if it keeps moving forward on her head, but then how come I can barely buckle it? I ask her to "squeeze her teeth together" when I'm putting it on. It took me forever to get it tight enough and sure enough...

She uses it with her trike and I know it's not exactly necessary but it is just a good habit. She is 2.5 but the helmet is for 3+, but... the straps are adjustable and by all the official indicators, it fits. But then it doesn't.

Anyone know of a good baby helmet that we can wear for two months? Or how to tighten this one properly? Tips?

The main thing that should keep the helmet from moving on her head are the pads inside the helmet. That part should be snug. The chin strap is more to keep it from falling off in an accident then to keep it from moving back and forth in everyday use.
It sounds like it might not be snug enough around her head, even though the straps are pulling it tight down onto her head. This will keep it from moving around. The test I always run on myself when trying on helmets is to give it a good smack from the front to try to push it back off of my forehead.

Here's the helmet that we've used for our kids from about a year on: Giro "Me 2" You can find it plenty of other places, this is just the first link I came across.

Good luck finding something that works better for you!
Thank you very much ladies. Very clear answers. I will look at the giro. EEEK the price, though admittedly about $918 gazillion less than a lifetime of special care thanks to head injury... maybe that will be my present to my daughter... Simplehome, how long could your kids wear the Giro Me 2?
Of course, every kid's head is different, but my son is still able to wear it. I have given it to his little sister, and I think his bigger helmet is more comfortable for him but it has lasted him until 4 years old at least.
BELL is a very popular brand for children's helmets. That's what we got for DS. He doesn't like to wear it, but we insist when out for bikes rides/trailer rides.

I would also suggest finding a local cyclery shop and get their opinion.
Hmmm... we do have a local sports shop that could probably use our business and then I could try it on. Too bad, she really likes her Elmo helmet (picked it out herself). It must not fit her head shape. Thanks again!

Didn't the helmet come with additional pads?

Any good bike helmet comes with additional foam pads to use to help secure the helmet to your head shape. If it's sliding forward, it generally needs an extra pad around/on top of the forehead padding.

Do you double up the pads? I don't see how that would be possible? Anyway... maybe we will check out buying a pack of pads first. Thanks!
I was actually able to find a helmet made for skating that fit smaller than any bike helmet I found.
We got a great one. It has a dial on the back to adjust the fit while on the child. This has worked MUCH better for us than pads. It wasn't too pricey either (at least not comparatively)

If she doesn't fall in love with a helmet that fits properly, get the proper-fitting helmet and some Elmo stickers.

Oh, trini, that's why they made you a SENIOR member.

I would consider contacting your local police stations, fire stations & hospitals and asking if they do bike helmets. Ours do. The helmet is excellent quality, only $5-10 and they fit it right there. They also show a short video about safety and making sure your helmet fits right.
