So I got an 18wk ( I was only 17 wks 4 days) ultrasound last week and it all appeared fine. There was a normal amount of amniotic fluid, the baby appeared to be active (though I haven't really felt any consistent kicks) and was measuring about 19 wks. I went home happy and delighted.

A few days later I go to my midwife and she tells me that they saw two small cysts in the brain. A-WHAT!? She said that she sees them every couple of years and it nothing to worry about, especially since the pictures showed no other soft or structural markers for Downs and Trisomy 18 and 13. WHAT!? I am totally freaked and have been obsessively researching. I have found a lot of info but i still feel awful and can't help thinking the worst. I have been scheduled for a level 2 ultrasound for tomorrow and I am SO SO SO nervous! I'm glad my husband will be here for it. I do wonder why if she thinks it's no big deal why schedual the level 2.

Is there anyone else out there that this has happened too? How did things turn out. What really scares me is that I read somewhere online that only 50% of babies show any "markers" at all for Downs and the only real test is an amnio which totally freaks me out too. I would love to hear anyones experience's.

Thank you all so much and I'll post again to update you all on how tomorrow goes.

I had a client who had an ultrasound that resulted in the same thing you describe, along with the old standard kidney issues. It turned out to be nothing... Make sure to give us the update after your level II ultrasound.

I just went to a follow up u/s because they found a choroid plexus cyst the first go round... while the dr was scanning, she said that if thats all she sees she won't even do a follow up they're that no-big-a-deal. (first u/s ALSO shows a thicker neck but i had the amnio to rule out downs... so there was STEAM coming out my ears when she said that, since there was NO REASON for me to be there!)

Relax! If thats all she found... just enjoy seeing your baby again. I go to a midwife practice and they make you rotate amongst the midwives so you are comfy with all of them... and I've asked 3 different midwives what the possible outcomes would be if they STILL saw the cysts at my followup u/s - and the answer each time was that chances of seeing it again were tiny/they usually resolve themselves and no one could tell me anything about a bad outcome! So I think you're fine... try (and I KNOW its easier said than done) to relax and trust that baby is fine!

this was the case with my nephew...
in many cases they resolve by 28w gestation
she freaked out and her OB pushed her into an amnio because she was 35
he is now 5 and ALL BOY!! and his cysts resolved at 28 weeks after all of that
good luck I hope today went great

I hope that your ultrasound went well.

I would like to put it out there that you could choose to forgo further testing. If an amnio indicates possible Downs, what would you do differently for the rest of your pregnancy? It's not a conclusive test.

I'm sorry you are going through this.

Thank you all for your support!

We had the level 2 ultrasound today and they STILL found no other "markers". Our baby was bouncing around and was measuring big again...19+, almost 20 weeks! They could hardly see the cysts and it has been less than a week since my last ultrasound! The sonographer even made a comment that the first sonographer may not have even seen anything and just jumped to the conclusion that a shadow might have been a cyst(s). We were offered genetic testing but we declined.
I feel really good/relieved/happy/hopeful after this that our baby is healthy and that this was all alot of hooplah. I know that technology is here to serve us, but sometimes I feel like when we try and understand things we really don't problems arise.

If anyone still want to post their experiences I would love to hear....
