Anyone try a natural zeolite for gentle detox? I am thinking of beginning Super-Z-Lite by omica

http://omica.com/products/Super-Z-Lite-Liquid.htm

Zeolites have proved effective in treating some children with autism. But, I haven't met many people who have tried them on children as young as my son (18 months). I just met one women yesterday with a 3 1/2 year old and he said his first word after starting on it.

I remember reading something about zeolites in the Chelatin' Mamas thread over in Dental (chelating both kids and moms).

I've heard good things about it though we haven't tried it. An Aussie fellow that I know on another board said that if you use zeolite you need to drink a lot of fluids to keep the kidneys hydrated otherwise the kidneys can get overloaded. I don't belong to it but there is a yahoo group that discusses the use of zeolite. http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/AutismNCD

Because this is a stickied thread, and people are going to be looking to this for an objective view, I feel impelled to state for the record that some of the treatments listed above are highly controversial.

Many are helpful, many are harmless, but some have been referred to as human rights violations. Most autistic adults find the DAN! protocol to verge on child abuse.

Even if one disagrees with that view, there is a great deal of material available that challenges the efficacy of many of these treatments. Parents of special-needs children are often uniquely vulnerable to the attempts of unscrupulous practitioners to make money from the hopes these parents have for their children. Many of these practitioners are active in the field of autism treatment.

In the interests of fairness, I will also state that many parents claim to have found these treatments helpful. I personally have found several of the things listed above (EFAs and digestive enzymes, for instance) to be wonderful.

Please do your own research on anything you read, and make your own mindful, informed decision.

Since this is a thread to go to for biomed info, and I'm not really trying to derail it, I'll take this to PMs and send you a few links.

Let me clarify, however, that I am NOT making a blanket statement about all DAN! treatments or all DAN! doctors. I'm just putting it out there than DAN! is somewhat controversial.

ETA: Whoops. Can't send PMs until I renew my membership. Here's what I would have sent, though:

I have to go to sleep... it's my wedding anniversary and my husband conked out on me so I'm bitchy and posting cranky autism things, but I WILL send you some stuff on this tomorrow if you'd still like me to.

FWIW, the most even-handed autism blogger, IMO, is Kristina Chew at autismvox.com. I think she discusses the DAN! issue.

DAN stands for Defeat Autism Now. There are numerous DAN practioners worldwide who treat the underlying health issues in children with autism and related disorders. Some of these children 'recover,' and the heatlh of other children improve significantly.

I am pro biomed because both of my ASD children have improved significantly since we started seeing a practioner who followed the DAN methodology. We do do chelation on my children and they improved greeatly once we started pulling the metals from their bodies.

I do have to agree w/ Individ. poster that you do need to do your research on the doctor and whatever intervention you are interested in...just like you would research a mainstream doc's qualification or a treatment a doctor is suggesting for a health condition.

More and more research is being done on some of these interventions.

Here is a nice article from Discover Magazine about the brain-gut connection in Autism:
http://discovermagazine.com/2007/apr...st-in-the-head

Thank you for the links and when I have more brain power, nerve and don't have to go and pump I will sit down and read more.

I was wondering if anyone can point me at some good chelation therapies? I have purchased a homeopathic mix called VAC which is supposed to help the body rid itself of the nasty chemicals in vaccines, but I haven't found any good concrete info on Chelation yet, other than it is helpful.

We haven't done chelation but from what I've read the best way to do it is low and slow like Andrew Cutler's approach. If you can get his book.

There's a group of MDC mamas in the Dental Forum who have a Chelating Tribe. http://www.mothering.com/discussions...ight=chelating

Also, check out the Yahoo group below.
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/chelatingkids2/

Can I post another resource?

The NeuroSensory Centers of America (located throughout the US) use non-invasive FDA approved testing very high tech, Star Trek like, to discover the source of neuro-sensory disorders (migraines, fibromyalgia, autistic spectrum, dyslexia and others) and then customize treatment based on test results. Protocol is low and slow and gentle. It's helped my DS with sensory issues TONS!

www.neurosensorycenters.com

Here are several places where you can get supplements.

http://www.ourkidsasd.com/ (they have all kinds of supplements from various companies like Kirkman, Bioray, etc. and a lot of the time you can find the supplements on sale).

http://www.brainchildnutritionals.co...child_Nux.html (This is a company started by a parent of a child on the spectrum. They specialize in liquid supplements).

http://www.kirkmanlabs.com/ (They have a variety of supplements. If your child is ultrasensitive be sure to get their hypoallergenic supplements that are free of sweetners.)

Kirkman and Brainchild both offers trial sizes. It's good to try a trial size of a supplement first to see how your child will react.

I think parents should do due diligence before they give their child any supplement or medicine whether it comes from a pediatrician, a naturopath, or a DAN doctor.

There are many who call themselves DAN doctors but they don't know the protocol well so it behooves parents to talk to other parents in their area doing the biomed approach to find a reliable professional.

The best improvement in terms of language, improvement in social behavior, and reduction in problematic behaviors, for my ASD child came after we started the DAN! protocol. I have no regrets about the supplements and treatments we've tried so far for DD. It has worked really well for her.
