One of my favorite things that my past DDC did was a birth bead exchange. Everyone picked out a set of beads (or a couple sets) and did a little write up about why they picked that bead. What did it represent for them? What did it symbolize? For example, someone sent a little owl charm and said she prayed for wisdom for all of us during our birthing time and as new mothers. Another woman sent a rainbow to remind us of how joyful we would feel after the "storm" of labor and we are finally holding our babies. Some sent poems and verses. I cried my eyes out while reading the messages from each of the other ladies-- it was so beautiful! Then, we each took our beads, and fashioned necklaces or bracelets with them and wore them during our labors. This was to strengthen us, encourage us, and inspire us. I still have my necklace-- I love it. It reminds me of the new friends I made and of the solidarity we had together as pregnant and birthing women. I kept all the messages and intended to read them during early labor, but I never really had an early labor (things got intense pretty quickly!) so that never happened, but it was a nice thought, haha.

Here is a blog post about a blessing way ceremony where they did a similar bead exchange: http://www.motherrisingbirth.com/2014/08/blessingway.html

If you are interested in the exchange, please comment below. I will give everyone a few weeks to get to the craft store to collect your beads. I will then private message any interested my address so you can send your beads in to me. Please also include $3 for shipping and your home address. I will then put them all together and mail out a complete set of beads as a package so that you can get creative and make your necklace/bracelet!
Hobby Lobby, Joann Fabrics, Michaels-- they should all have sets of beads that you can purchase pretty inexpensively (Like $5 for a dozen glass beads). You can choose any type of bead or charm you like. The cool thing about these necklaces is how eclectic they are! (Just like all of us).
Deadline to comment below that you are participating: September 14.
Deadline to mail out your birth beads: October 1.
After the September 14 deadline, we will know how many mamas are participating so we know how many beads to purchase. One (or two) beads for each mama involved. We will each get an entire set of beads from the whole DDC!
Let me know if anyone has any questions!
