Anyone know of a good way to go about doing this? I'm going to discuss with my midwife when I see her next week since I know she has the answer, but a while back someone had given me a specific name of someone to speak to at vital records when obtaining one. Apparently this particular person who was amazingly a man (hehe) knew exactly what to do and was the go-to guy.
Any tips, hints, whatever appreciated!!!!
Thanks!
I know you were having issues with getting the birth certificate. Did you make any progress?

I don't know who he was but he probably doesn't work there anymore lol...
I do have an update on this and am going to cut and paste since I'm nak
Here's the original thread so you guys have an idea of what can/may/may not happen...
http://www.mothering.com/discussions...d.php?t=322790

I hadn't heard from anyone since Tuesday so I called the Senator's office this
morning.
The first person who responded to email told me that I wasn't in his district so he
forwarded my email to the person who he thought was my representative. I never
told him my address, but I mentioned the health dept that came out and he
thought that I lived in that city, so that's why he forwarded the case.
Anyhoo, the senator who he forwarded the email to called me to get my address
and it turns out that I'm NOT in her district but she wanted to pursue it anyway
because according to the secretary I talked to, the situation enraged her and
even though she wasn't my senator this is the kind of person she is. Yay women!
Apparently they called the supervisor of the dude at vital records and things
are currently being "investigated" whatever that means. She said that if they
don't hear anything by Monday they'll call over there again and they'll also
give me a call to update me on the situation.
At first when she said that the situation pissed off the senator (in so many
words) I thought she was angry with ME for bugging her or something, but turns
out she's upset with vital records.
She said "If I were you I wouldn't even worry about it" which made me feel a lot
better but I will believe all of this when I see the birth certificate in my
hands lol!
I've gotten a lot of feedback on the mothering boards and there are several
people who have said they've had trouble too, had to lie or even knew of people
that basically had to take an act of congress to get a freaking birth
certificate.
It got me to thinking today about how it's very similar to the abortion issue if
you really consider the circumstances. I can choose to have a baby or not, but
I can't choose my birth attendant. When I'm pondering WHY that is, I'm guessing
they're trying to protect the babies or something (like a pro life stance??)
since DEM's are illegal in Maryland. The reason why they're illegal is because
(I'm guessing here) they're not formally trained in medicine and that is a
threat??? Of course I don't think so, but we're not talking open heart surgeons
here. It's all political. The state doesn't want the possibility of many
lawsuits regarding malpractice so they make DEM's illegal. Fact of the matter
is more ob's are being sued for crap that happens during birth than midwives.
Midwives are who everyone is turning to!
So anyway off my soapbox. You all know what I'm talking about
Take care,
Karen, I am so sorry you're having to deal with this crap. You're right, it's ridiculous.

The reason DEM's are illegal is because of the very very powerful OBGYN lobby in Maryland. MD has a higher than average concentration of OBs, and they have banded together to create state medical regulations that are only in their interest. They allow CNMs because they have to bow to the authority of the OB. DEMs do not. In my county, not sure if this is true elsewhere, the OBs have successfully managed to block ALL family practitioners from being able to deliver babies in hospitals. They are that powerful -- they allow them to do prenatal care, but the actual devlieries must be done by OBs -- the FPs do not have the same priveleges. Isn't that absurd?

Anyway, please let us know when you get the birth certificate!
