My mw, who was great, as of last time I checked taken care of this and I was wondering how long everyone else had to wait?
I have to go down and see if it has been recorded yet, I am getting really tired of waiting though.

Wow that is a long time! I think it is different depending on what State you live in. I know where I live you can get a birth certificate in 2 weeks. I hope I don’t have to wait too long because we need to get a passport for the baby to go out of country in December.

Call to see if it's on file. If your MW turned in the paperwork the county clerk (or whoever handles such things in your state) would have register the birth. In many states that won't get you a BC in hand. You must pay for a certified copy to get that.

It has been almost a month and I haven't received the BC yet. I know she sent in the paperwork, because she filled it out here and I gave it to my father to mail along with the other mail I had.

you don't need a BC to get an SSN. I haven't gotten a copy of my son's BC yet, but received his social security card in the mail a while ago.

I don't think we ever got a copy of the BC, even though we requested one. MW says it's not unusual to have issues and for it to take FOREVER. Now I need a certified copy for my first DS, and I don't think we ever got one of those from his hospital birth! So now I have to find that site with instructions on how to get one... We did eventually get a SS card for home-born DS2, though, so I know someone got the info!

My mw sent in the paperwork right away when DD was born, and I sent in the request for the certified copy by mail within a week or two. It came back TWICE because they were confused by the fact that DH took my last name when we got married : despite my lengthy note explaining the whole thing in detail with the second request. They kept saying I was writing my "maiden name" incorrectly. GAH. Finally I had to go down in person to the county office and request it, at which point the clerk made a fuss both about the fact that DD was born at home and that DH had taken my name (acting as though both of those things made her job harder, puh-lease). But, I got it!

My mother worked with a woman who was married four times. Widowed twice and divorced once she was four times married to unrelated men by the last name of Anderson. It's a good thing she never applied for a marriage license in that county. That clerk wouldn't have known what to do.

For us, I'm pretty sure the request for the SS card went along with the birth certificate filing. So it was sent to us even though we did not receive an official copy of the birth certificate.

For anyone else in Texas, I was able to order both of my boys' birth records online last night! I was very glad to not have to go down to an office somewhere and wrangle through all of that. So hopefully they'll show up in a couple of weeks! Surely other states may have similar programs, too?

I'm not looking fwd to the process here. I 'spose I could skip it, but I like having a copy of a bc for all the kids and dh and me. Anyway I have to go to the recorder within 7 days -- NOT business days, actual days, weekends and all -- and bring "proof" of pregnancy, despite the fact that I'm UP'ing and I refuse to go to any of the hcp here in town to get "proof." I'm hoping a note from my chiro will suffice.
