I know it's a tad early
but I am already thinking about music I would like to play during labor/delivery.

Any suggestions? What are you going to have (if you are having music)?

So you can get a feel for what I like, I am going to have both Norah Jones CDs, The Indigo Girls "Swamp Ophelia" and Wynton Marsalis "Standard Time, Vol.2.

"Power of Two" from Swamp Ophelia is DH and my song.

I think I'll have a variety since who knows what I'll want to listen to. Tori Amos, Neil Young, Enya, Loreena McKennit, some celtic, maybe some soundtracks (LOTR, etc...).

I think it's smart to have a variety.

I've made 2 cd's so far... one of very calming, soft harp music... always helps me relax... another with relaxing, yet still more energetic music... it was in the *new age* section, but I'm not sure how I'd describe it... I want that for transition when I need more strength... and I want to find some good tribal sounds for during pushing... something to really capture the primal energy I feel then. I haven't found anything for that yet... guess I'd better get hurrying!

Since the same hormones that are used in birthing are used in lovemaking, I'd suggest that whatever music turns you on, it will be the best music to move you through labor.

Of course, there are always the stereotypical "birth" CDs like Enya, Windham Hill, etc. Then again, if these are the tunes that get you hot, go for it!

When I was pregnant with my son I got really into collecting music/sounds to listen to for the birth. I listened to it in the music in the evening when I was doing stretching and reading preggo/birth books in bed with my DP. Birth music is so personal/individual, but here is what I like:

Envoronmental sounds (my favorites are crickets and wind). I don't like environmental sounds cds that have musical accompaniament. I discovered that not many people are soothed by wind, because I had a horrible time finding this (I grew up in the great plains, where wind is just part of the landscape, not a bad thing)! I finally had success here:

I also got environmental sounds from used cd shops--this is where I found my beloved crickets.

For music, I like very minimalist stuff for labor. Check out stuff that people say is good for yoga, meditation, and getting a massage. Go to a music store that has a music section where you can listen to the music if you can and go to the new age section to help figure out what you like. I got a lot of good ideas from my yoga teacher.

Of other music, I like certain selections from Peter Gabriel's Passion (the soundtrack for the last temptation of christ) and the theme song to Rocky (gonna fly now) is good for a smile!

I also collected a bunch of narrative stuff to listen to in case I was bored from www.audible.com I am a David Sedaris and This American Life fan.

I ripped all my music/sounds into mp3s and had some little speakers I could hook up to my mp3 player in case I needed to listen to something at the hospital (they did not allow boom boxes that plugged into the wall).

Here's what's on my list so far:

B-Tribe (Fiesta Fatal, Sensual, Sensual)
Banco de Gaia (10 Years Vol1 and Vol2, You Are Here)
Tori Amos (Little Earthquakes, Boys for Pele, Tales of a Librarian, Scarlet's Walk)
Annie Lennox (Wonderful)
Peter Gabriel (Passion, Birdy)
Enya (A Day Without Rain, Watermark)
to Pamela on this one

Hey, it's my first baby. I'm expecting the labour to last 30+ hours. I want a lot of musical choices available to me. Lord only knows what my mood is going to be after the 15th hour.

Wow, great variety! I think that ya'll are right about having a lot of different genres to choose from. I think I would be upset if I wasn't *really* in the mood for jazz, but rather somtehing else and it weren't available.

Pamela, I did not know that about the hormones in labor being the same as in lovemaking! I have a lot of music that I can refer to for that!
And I love your sig. So true.

ZeldasMom, I hadn't considered environmental sounds before. I have a tape of the ocean with some whale sounds on part of it that I have always liked. And I had a massage last month and the lady had on a CD that had rain, ocean, crickets, and I'm sure a few other things, but it had instrumental as well. I will look for something similar for it was extremely relaxing.

Thanks for all of the suggestion!
You guys are good sports.
