My nieces are 2 and 5. The 2 year-old's birthday is this month. Do we need to get them both a gift? I say the 5 year old is old enough to understand that it isn't her day. My MIL says not. What's your thought?

please, please, please don't do it. My little sister used to get gifts on my birthday and it used to piss me off soooooo bad. It is the bday kid's special day, and the sibling has to learn that they do not get presents on that day. It always made my bday feel less special because she got gifts too.

You are just the aunt, not the grandma. Don't listen to your MIL. Go with your instincts.

I've never heard of such an idea. Kids get too much stuff anyways.

Thanks! I explained that I never got stuff on my sister's b-day and she was all huffy. (This was after complaining that dh's stepmom didn't buy a gift for the older sis.) I LOVE the idea of it making the b-day girl feel less special. Will use it if it comes up again!
