birthday ideas? my sweetie's turning 8 this week

We only do kid parties on odd birthdays in our family (long story, just think introverted, OCDish mama) and he's particularly bummed about that this year. Fortunately he has lots of cousins (all younger though) and a big family coming Saturday. It's probably going to be great weather and we have a big yard. Any ideas for fun things to do? They have to be toddler-safe and preferably not wet.

Or, even just special rituals, gifts, etc, that you like?

Oh! must get out the birthday ring! That overpriced thing I love anyway....

What about hula hoops, bubbles, sidewalk chalk and that sort of thing?

We just had a carnival party for both our boys and I made some really simple games for the kids. A Ping Pong toss made with a box, small dixie cups ( one up one down across the box) and some ping pong balls. Then a Ring Toss with again a box, some beer bottles and rings.

The ppl I used to nanny for used to let their kids think of any birthday cake conconction they wanted and the dad would make it. They are 18 and 20 now and he still does it.

For us even if their party is not the day of their birthday, on their actual bday we decorate the house the night before, have some ballons and gifts on the bday chair so that when they get up it is waiting for them. And then they get to pick the breakfast and the dinner. We also make it THEIR day, to pick any games, stories or videos.

A friend of mine makes paper feet and lays then out from the bed to the presents for her dd to follow, a tradition that was started with her dh when he was a kid. I think that is cute as well. Or maybe make a scavenger hunt for his presents or even for the kids at the party to do with maps and such.

Another friend when her kids are bored makes a list of things for them to find and when they do they get an ice pop or such at the end.

Hope this helps and hope your boys day is wonderful!

thanks mamabug - there are some great ideas in your post. We do the birthday cake idea and we've had some really amazing cakes, hahah. I like the idea of little notes and paper feet.
You could also set up an obstacle course for the kids that are coming. Also do you have a sandbox? Maybe do a dinosaur thing and have the dig up dinosaur "bones"?

You will have to post and let me know how it goes!
well, turns out some cousins aren't coming... I'll let you know how it goes though. The kid crowd won't be quite as big as I thought though.
You could also do some face painting. Kids love that.

And why not have a game for adults. I went to a party and the host put a post it on everyones back with the name of a famous person, it could be a historical figure, political, religious, entertainment. You got to ask everyone 3 yes or no questions to try and guess who you were. It was very fun! I plan to use it myself someday, if I ever have time to have an adult party again! :LOL

They also played a married version of the Newleywed game which was also fun!
We used regular washable paint this weekend and it worked out great! Hope it goes great and if I think of anything else I will be back!

Mambug has some great ideas here...just wanted to chime in that my DD did this at her slumber party 2 years ago (at age 10) and the girls suggested it again when they were here last Friday for another slumber party.

Younger kids can play if you use characters they're familiar with (television, nursery rhymes, etc).

Here are some possible games - Sack races, Water Ballon Toss, Bingo, 3 legged races.
You could get a T-shirt for your daughter and let everyone autograph it with fabric markers.

Since my birthday was St. Patrick's day, my mom would hide paper shamrocks around the house. Who ever found the most would win.

Let us know what you decide to do.

I love the tee shirt idea, what a great keepsake. You could even do this with a plain white pillow case that says Happy Birthday DD. This way she can use it forever!
Just thought of one more thing. You could make plain white squares and have everyone decorate it and then stitch it up to make a lap quilt too. With the center block being bigger saying Happy BDay DD
