My 3mo DS has a birthmark on his scrotum that covers about half of it. Today part of it looks inflamed- really bright red, my husband and I both actually thought it was bleeding when we first saw it. It almost looks like an open blister or a burn? Sorry, I'm probably not describing it very well...He doesnt have any type of diaper rash and he doesn't seem to be in any pain.

Has anyone had any experience with birthmarks doing anything like this?

No. Go to the ped on Monday and get a referral for a pediatric dermatologist.

It looks exactly the same other than the one area that has changed from the wine color to bright red. The shape and size are all the same. Our ped had said that because of where it is located we would really have to watch it. I will definitely call on Monday, just thought I'd see if anyone has any experience in the meantime!

My son has a birthmark on his inner thigh that sounds similar. It started out as pinkish/red, and will occasionally flare up in color to a very angry looking red. It usually happens when he has been in the bath. The ped said it is basically a collection of blood vessels really near to the surface of the skin, and heat makes the blood vessels dilate, so it gets much brighter/blood colored. Not sure if this is what is going on with your little guy, but thought I would share.

Can you describe what the birthmark looks like? Color? Shape? Flat or raised? Smooth or lumpy?

It is flat, not raised at all. The shape is not symmetrical, but it is more round than anything. Colorwise it is generally just a deeper pink/red than the rest of his skin, but it does turn a deeper wine color sometimes. Smooth or lumpy is harder to describe because of where it is located, but it looks the same as the surrounding skin.

You know how the scrotum has a "line" down the middle? Thats where the bright red is located and extends a little to either side.

My DD has a strawberry hemangioma on her chest, and when she was first born, it was completely flat and white, almost transparent-like. As she got older, as the specialist told us, the birthmark became puffy and bright red. It doesn't bleed, although I guess the risk of bleeding is always there since it's a vascular birth mark. The birth mark grew rapidly until she was about 1 year old and is now decreasing just as rapidly. There were points where it looked like it was bleeding, but I have no idea about the scrotum location...

We went to the ped yesterday and she thinks its yeast so we are going to treat that. If it is not better by tomorrow than she is going to send us to a dematologist right away. If it does clear up then she will hold off until he is a little older. She wants him to see a dermatolgist just because of where it is located, but if it turns out just to be yeast, she feels comfortable waiting. We would have to drive about 3 hours and to a different state to see the ped dermatologist so if possible, we will put it off until we have better weather and its safe to drive on the roads!
