Daycare dad: "When he bites, we want you to bite him back"

Me: "Are you serious?"

DCD "yes, we thought about this, and we think this is the best way to teach him not to bite"

Me: "By having ME bite him?"

DCD "yes"

Me: "You want me to bite this baby, so he learns NOT to bite?"

DCD: "Well, when you say it that way, it does sound strange. But, that's how my Mom got me to stop biting my brother"

Me: "Call your Mom today, and see if she remembers how many times she had to bite you before you quit biting your brother"

********** 2 hours later***************

DCD: "My mom said she bit me about a half dozen times, then I stopped biting my brother. But, then my brother called and said, Mom bit me about a half dozen times before he quit tattling on me for biting him"

He told me to "nevermind biting his son"

That's awesome!

A couple of years ago my girls and I were waylaid at the grocery store by the mother of an old friend. She was telling me about her grandchild and how she used to take care of the kid, but now he goes to daycare.

For some reason she felt moved to share a few pearls of childrearing wisdom with me. She told me how much she loved the baby stage, but then with toddlerhood came biting, so she had to bite him back. Then came hairpulling, but of course he quit when she started pulling his hair back. She got stumped with toilet learning, so she told her daughter that since he was 3 and still in diapers, she couldn't watch him anymore.

I finally ran out of patience/polite exit tactics, so I just said, "It's great to see you (not!) but I really have to go!"

Dd (age 4) called out loudly as I pushed the cart away "Bye bye, Poopy Pooper!"
