My 8 year old DD and my husband both asked me to post here asking for advice on how to help them stop biting their nails. They both bite so far that they hurt themselves and they would like to stop.

I asked and it seems to be more of an unconscious/bored thing rather than a nervous thing. (if that makes a difference)

TIA!

I used Witchcraft nail hardener to help me stop biting my nails before my wedding. Its a clear polish. It did help, but I've since stopped using it. :

If polish isnt something you'd like to use, I've also used sweet almond oil. When I get the urge to bite, I'd massage some oil onto my nails and cuticles. It would soften up the cuticles (to be able to push them back) and it just gave me something to do during those mind-numbing times - watching tv for instance.

HTH!

My brother and I are lifelong nail biters. My DH has picked up the habit and now so has my DS (11). My DS hides it from me.

They have a bitter nail solution you can paint on nails to make them taste nasty. I think they carry it at the drug store. It didn't work for us because I am really bad about consistancy.

I bit my nails until I was a teen. The yucky stuff never worked for me, I just got used to the taste. LOL I'll look into the nail hardener stuff and mention the oil to DH. We have some of that.

Any other ideas?

I have bitten my nails for my entire life, and only two things have ever caused me to stop. (Temporarily for me, but it might be permanent for other people.) One thing was to identify the times I was most likely to bite my nails and do something else with my hands instead, like knit, cross-stitch, do crossword puzzles, etc. The other thing was to get a manicure. Part of the reason I bite my nails is an OCD quest to get them all even, no hangnails, no overgrown cuticles, etc. By getting a manicure and having all those things done, the OCD impulse fades. Also, I can't stand the idea of biting on the chemicals in nail polish. For some people, just knowing that biting their nails will ruin the look of the manicure is enough, especially if they spent good money on it.

Yeah, can't get a manicure when your nails are waaay below the top of your finger, though.

The only thing that has EVER worked for me has been fake nails... I know it's toxic and weird, but they look great and you sure can't get to your nails to bite them! I actually prefer the glueon ones from the grocery store or Walgreens or wherever. They look more natural and are way easier and cheaper.

This does not help your DH, of course.

Subscribing! I have two little nail biters too! They don't bite them to nubs or anything...but they both don't like any 'white' showing on their nails. I wonder if the younger one was influenced by the older one....LOL Though I can be a nail nibbler too! Mine is usually when stressed or bored and I don't realize it until it's too late!

Pepperdove/Jennisee, I too was only ever able to TOTALLY stop by having a manicure as well...or fake nails. Bah! There has to be a better solution!
