I don't think you have to be actively using a device for it to pick up a signal from a wireless network. </p>

Well, on my old iPhone and current Droid X, as well as my MacBook, if you want to see what other wireless networks are in the area, you actually have to go into your settings to see the list of available wireless networks. Unless someone has an app that makes that sort of thing pop up on your home screen, it's not going to just pop up on your phone. You have to go looking for that info.</p>

Well the OP said that her phone prompted her to connect to the network. My experience has been that if you are outside the range of your normal network then an unsecured network might result in the device asking if you want to connect to said network.</p>

<p>That being said, I have never and have no intention of ever using an iPhone.</p>
