One of the congregants in my church has seen me deal with some organization-related challenges and offerred me his older Blackberry (he has a newer one).

My probably naive question
is:

I don't have cell phone service. Do the Blackberry functions work stand-alone, or only with cell service. In other words, if I just used that and that alone for my calendar (not that and a computer), would that work? Or does the Blackberry need cell service in order for its features to work.

no, i had a 7250(i think) and you do NOT have to have service for the calendar to work. with no service that's prettymuch all it is!

With service, a Blackberry is great - you can get your email and even access most web pages.

I had one with my job and I really miss being able to access my email whereever I go. I used it more for the email than the phone!

Not sure about the cell service question, but I say if it functions as an electronic calendar -- go for it!

Someone at work gave me their PDA after they got a Blackberry, and I LOVE it!!!! I can't believe how much easier it is to manage my schedule using this instead of my old notebook style calendar.

I think it would probably work. You'll have to manually set the date/time where if you have a service, a lot of the time, the date/time is set automatically from the server.

If it'll work for you, go for it!

You know, I've been thinking about it, and I don't think I'll take it. At first I was thinking, "cool, it will be an electronic calendar...that's got to be easier to manage."

But then I realized that after a lot of trial and error, I've figured out a system recently that really has been working for me. It's a paper "daytimer," but it has room for me to take meeting notes in it too, which I love. I like that I can take this one small notebook everywhere I go, and have my calendar as well as a notetaker right on hand. If I go to the Blackberry, I'm thinking it may be harder to take notes.

My hubbys boss gave him his old blackberry this past winter. He is in the middle of writing a novel and uses it to jot down ideas on his lunch break. He uses it as an electronic organiser ( really really cool for this) and an alarm clock. You can download things like a dictionary or thesaurus online for it. You can upload pictures onto it. We do this all without any cell phone service. Hubby really loves his.
