and in big fat letters it says DO NOT TAKE IF YOU ARE BREASTFEEDING and of course talk to your doctor if you are pregnant and DO NOT TAKE PAST 38 WEEKS OF PREGNANCY...and I'm supposed to feel safe about this? By the way I am still nursing my 2.5 year old which I am sure that I told her. The name of it is NITROFURANTN MOMO 100 MG. CAP.

Our phone is out so I can't page the doc, but I'm not going to take it until I talk to her. What is the best way to rid a bladder infection while pregnant and breastfeeding?

Nitrofurantoin is Category B for pregnancy, meaning it's effectively among the safest drugs to take while pregnant (there's pretty much nothing in Category A, so B is really good). The link is from safefetus.org, a great place to check drugs. It also says it's safe for breastfeeding.

Most drugs have all kinds of scary warnings along those lines, whether or not they're accurate; mostly it's the drug manufacturers covering their butts.

I would take it if I were you.

they rxed that to me and I did not take it. ask for amoxocilin instead, it is used more often. I didn't take anything after all - I drank lots of fluids, cranberry juice, o-juice - all the acidy stuff....

I recently had a UTI and had to be on antibiotics. I told my doctor I was nursing (didn't have a BFP yet) but when I got my prescription filled I was a little alarmed by all the warnings too. I asked my pharmacist and they said it was fine for the length I was going to be using it. Certainly talk to someone if you are uncomfortable but I usually check meds with safefetus.org pp mentioned too so if it says it's ok the benefits must outweigh the risks.

thank you everyone so much. Maybe I'll do some natural stuff along side the script. I think I've had the bladder infection for a while, so I might need more than cranberry juice to get rid of it.

thanks for the link too

Bladder infections can cause preterm labor. Please be careful. Call your pharmacist and discuss the warnings with him/her. Odds are if it's category B it's also safe for breastfeeding, although it may cause a reduction in supply. Nitrofurantoin is very commonly prescribed for bladder infections in pregnancy.

You can also check Hale's for more information on the breastfeeding side.

Just a word of advice, if you decide to get cranberry juice get the "Just Cranberry" by Knudsen. It doesn't have sugar and its ALL cranberry. Most of the other stuff out there is soooo watered-down or mixed with other juices its not very effective.

Good luck!!

I have had a lot of experience with UTIs and sometimes you can get rid of the infection by completely flushing yourself with water, sugar free cranberry juice, and other natural methods. However, this only works at the very beginning of the infection. If the infection has had more time to settle in, it's there to stay, and you must take antibiotics. Otherwise (trust me) it can spread to the kidneys and that's when the heavy duty antibiotics come out. Definitely double check with your prescriber (and pharmacist) before you start taking anything, but please take it if you need it to avoid further infection. Not trying to scare you or sound overly medical, just wanting to share the benefit of my experience. Good luck!

I had a UTI w/ DD2, I used the cranberry juice method, basically drinking two of those big containers of it, then eating lots of yogurt the next day. Its worth a try, I would do that before the Rx

Good advice from everyone already... just wanted to add that if you aren't already aware that the straight cranberry juice is incredibly sour! I personally can't drink it straight. I buy two natural apple juices to mix it with so I can get it down. Plus that way there's more fluid oz flushing through. I also always keep a supply of cranberry capsules/pills handy even though they may not be as effective/ and you still need to flush liquids they are great to start immediately at the first sign of a UTI when you can't get to the store quite yet...

Just to add: make sure you're getting good probiotics too, while you're taking the antibiotics. Be sure to allow for two hours after taking the a/bx before taking probiotics, though, so the a/bx has time to work. This can help prevent thrush for your nursling, and yeast issues for you.

yeah, I have to have it practically a step up from frozen to tolerate it. But its worth it compared to the UTI.
