Jonah was born on the 18th and his cord fell of yesterday. His belly botton looks normal for newborn, but it is bleeding slightly. Not a lot, just enough that I see little spots of blood on his diaper and on his skin.

It doesn't look red or pussy or infected at all, just a little bloody. Should I be concerned about it? Is there anything I should be doing? We didn't put anything on the cord or anything.

My DS's stump fell off after five days, and he had a drop of brownish blood in his diaper every time I changed him for about a week or two after. I was very concerned, but it didn't look red or infected, and his ped said it was fine, it just fell off quickly. I just kept an eye on it, changed his dipe extremely often and he turned out just fine.

I really was expecting to find a perfectly healed little belly button under the stump when it fell off. I wasn't expecting a little wound, but I guess that can happen. I wouldn't stress too much unless it looks infected.

@OP: The same happened when DS cord stump fell off. I called the doc and they told me to just sweep off the blood (I guess it looks like dried up blood) from around the belly button with a cotton swab and some water. As long as it doesn't smell or gets read there's no need to worry. The 'bleeding' lasted for about 7/8 days or so and then it just stopped.

Yeah to both the pp's. My daughter's bled a bit heavily, so I took her to the ped., and she treated it with silver nitrate. If it's not very heavy, I would just let it heal itself, but I would keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't get infected.

Oh, and CONGRATULATIONS!!

We had a bit of this too just after Bridgie was born, it healed up after a few days. You can clean it with a little water and keep the diaper and any clothes from irritating it.

Thanks everyone. Yeah, it's only bleeding a tiny bit. I've been washing it off with water occasionally. We're going to the doctor on Friday, so I'll have him take a look at it, but I think it's probably fine. No sign of infection.
