I dyed a couple of skeins of wool last evening w/ some Procion dyes. I first soaked the wool in water and soda ash, then dyed using these directions: http://www.thekingspottery.com/boogie_baking%20wool.htm . After the wool cooled, I rinsed it for a while and then hung it to dry. When I was checking on the yarn today, I noticed that the dye was coming off on my hands. I figured I can rinse it some more, but I wanted to check here first to see if I missed something...

Maybe someone can chime in here because I don't have any personal experience with this, but I have *heard* that you should use an acid dye when dyeing wool...and that Procion isn't the best to dye wool.

But like I said, I don't know. I haven't venture away from Kool Aid.

With wool you need to use vinegar instead of soda ash. Though you can use soda ash or vinegar(or other acid) on silk(a protien fiber), wool(a protien fiber) must be used with an acid like vinegar or acetic acid.
In addition, soda ash can make the fibers of the wool brittle. It will do this to silk as well if left to sit long enough.

Any how, try completely rinsing as much of the dye out and start over. Check out the directions at Dharma or at http://gfwsheep.com/dyeing/dyeing.html( personally I like these directions better b/c give more info, even though I too use Procion dyes)
