blend strawbale and cob, can you do it?

So I know that cob is very labor intensive (and I love it), but why couldn't you blend cob and strawbales. You could put strawbales in the center and cob on the outside? It would go up quicker, still be earth friendly, and be beautiful! Anyone know? Any references to someone who might have done it?

Thanks!

You can. It's just siding at that point.

Yes.

sgnb.com teaches hybrid construction as part of their class. Usually the north wall is insulated with bales. But remember, this will drive up the cost.
How about straw bale on the outside, since insulation is its strong suit, and cob on the inside, where mass still works wonders?

We may end up building somewhere with both hot days and nights, so the thermal flywheel isn't going to be our hot/cold tool, therefore we will make straw exterior walls. But cob is too inexpensive and beautiful to not be used somewhere in our future house.
Our home has both strawbale and cob elements. Many people do cob on the south-facing side for thermal mass and have strawbale on the North side.
I'm with a PP on using the straw on the outside and cob on the inside.

We just built a straw-bale/adobe in this same way; adobe thermal mass on inside and straw on the outside. No straw on the south.

Good luck.
You may want to come up & check out Earthhavan Ecovillage near Asheville NC. They have built with straw bale and cob and have beautiful homes!!

Check them out at http://www.earthaven.org/

We love the look of cob too and hope to use it when we build.
