My blood sugar this afternoon was between 250-500 mg/dL or between 14-28. I'm so thirsty!! My breakfast was a protein shake and lunch a homemade burger and fries.

The midwife says it's too early to do much about it, and chances are it's just temporary. All the same, does anyone have any advice for keeping the blood sugar down? I don't eat a lot of sweets, although I'm craving sugar like crazy and peeing every 20 minutes.

A pretty common reason for craving sweets during pregnancy is a lack of protein. Try adding up your protein grams everyday and see if you can manage to get 80-100 grams a day. Maybe you are not getting enough and don't realize it (which is pretty easy to do). You can also take a look at Dr. Tom Brewer's website which give more info regarding a great pregnancy diet (and the risks of having a not so great one)...it is www.blueribbonbaby.org. Most midwives reccommend following the Brewer diet during pregnancy. I know that I lost my craving for sweets as soon as I upped my protein intake. And, like your midwife said...it may just be a temporary thing, but it doesn't hurt to modify one's diet.

Good luck to you

Thanks! Pre-pregnancy I'd been following the Carbohydrate Addict's diet, but found that it wasn't enough food when I became pregnant.

For me it's a slippery slope, to many carbs/sweets = cravings = too many carbs/sweets. So you may be right, I'll look closer at my protein.

Thanks,

I would also suggest more protein, less carbs and sweets. GD is no fun so at least you are finding out early and can maybe help it by eating so you dont have to go down the poking your finger 4 times a day track!
