Hey ladies!

I had blood drawn this morning for the basic tests I'm having done for my midwife.

Why do they have to take so much?! They took six vials of the stuff and now I feel kind of dizzy.

You'd think that pregnant ladies would have as little drawn as possible; we kind of need it!

I had my 6 tubes drawn this am also.

I am not feeling dizzy just hungry

I asked what they test for and man the list was long.

Hopefully they don't need to take that much again!!

Glad I'm not alone!!!

I looked over on the table as she was plunking the full tubes of MY BLOOD down on it and counted. WHOA! I asked the tech why they needed so much, but she didn't speak English well and didn't get my question.... wouldn't really matter anyway!

I've eaten my mid-afternoon sandwich already, and now I'm drinking licorice tea.... feeling a little better.

On the bright side, my blood looked nice and bright red! In years past it has been purplish.

They test for HIV, Anemia, Thyroid, blood type, blood counts (CBC, WBC), and that is all I caught as she rambled on...

Off to eat another snack.

You could have requested fewer tests... I have a blood req from our fertility doc sitting on our table because I have no intention of having my blood work done for him. Our midwife whittled it down to 3 for me that she thinks are useful. Lots less to deal with. I'm kinda tired of being poked and prodded after the fertility doc.

My mom is a phlebotomist (she draws blood), so I actually know the answer to this one. Different tests need to have different things done to the blood. Some of the tubes actually have stuff in them that mixes with the blood, some of the tubes don't, etc. And it isn't as much blood as it actually looks like.

Ah, with DS I had all the routine bloodwork done. I promptly passed out.

After I came too, the nurse that was looking after me told me that they have to use a different vial for each blood test. And of course, knowing jack back then, I didn't turn any of them down. So they took a ton.

Needless to say, I'm declining all blood tests this time around.

I would have declined the STD and HIV tests, but I have heard that if you are moved to the hospital (planning a homebirth) and don't have the negative test results, they treat you as positive. If I need to switch to the hospital, I want as little intervention as possible.

Heather: I hope your Mom is nicer than this lady. She inserted the needle, fine. Then JAMMED it up my vein so hard that I yelped! I never squeak at needles, but that was way too rough!

Another problem with declining tests is that your mw could get in trouble (if you are having a homebirth and end up with a hospital transfer). Our mw requires the standard panel of tests for that reason. Even though, yeah, some are pretty pointless (what are the odds my blood type has changed since my last pregnancy?)
