I used cloth for 6 months and just recently over the past month have been using disposibles because we were living with friends...and they use fabric softner...anyways....disposibles leak even worse than the cloth did....when my 7 month old poo's in disposibles the poo goes up his back...several outfit changes a day....and with cloth no outfit changes...only cover changes. So i think it's fairly normal.
I liked the twist with a snappi...that tends to keep it in more. I would hand wash my covers..that way you have them to use sooner than waiting to wash with the prefolds...just an idea..if you have a small stash of covers.

Do your covers fit well?

Yep they fit good, we aren't getting poo on clothes (usually) but on the cover. But I guess that is why they are there.

Yes - I agree. Way better to get poo on the cover than on the clothes! You could try the jelly roll fold to see if it works better for you...

I do the twist as well and while we do get some leaks (how in the world does a baby poo on the outside of a diaper and get none on the inside?? it's like magic!) they are pretty minimal. We can usually use the same cover for an entire day unless we have an explosion which is rare. I always make sure I fold/tuck in the legs as well after I snappi the diaper but before I put the cover on. Seems to help hold it in...

ETA: I second the fact that sposies are worse. She wore them for about 5 days before we started CD and leaked almost everytime she pooped. Without the cover for protection, it always got all over her clothes... I've worked in childcare for a long time as well and babies in sposies go through many outfits a day because of diapers leaking!

I always had to wash my covers w/poop, at least until they ate more solids. My infants were explosive! Most of the time it didn't leak to clothes, and I considered that good. Whenever I used sposies, they always leaked through to clothing.

I was always just grateful that it stayed in the cover. My friends who use sposies are constantly having blowouts up baby's back and down baby's legs, all over the clothes. At least if it stayed in the cover, I didn't have to change baby's whole outfit.

Two of my three were explosive poopers, and it often got on the cover. You can help by using the jellyroll fold, and by making sure your prefolds are snappied tightly around the legs. But I don't think you can avoid it completely, until baby gets old enough to eat solid foods.

I've only gotten poops on my covers twice (my son is 3 months), and I attribute it to the fact that we snappi the prefold, then "roll" the prefold under around his thighs (creating a sort of gusset around the legs). It's always contained the poops. The only time it's gotten on the cover was when it soaked through the prefold in the crotch area because it was a heavy poop... and we only had one layer of prefold in there.

Rolling the prefold around his thighs is the coolest thing ever - I forget where I saw that suggestion, but it's been awesome so far!

I thought I was terrible at folding my prefolds 'cause I had the same problem but for the past 2 weeks we've been using disposables (we're moving & with only one suitcase of stuff to last a month I couldn't justify taking up half of it with diapers!) & now I know a dirty cover is better than poop up to the neck. Disposables are HORRIBLE! I don't think he's had a poop yet in them that hasn't resulted in a complete change of clothes - ugh!
