Does anyone know what could cause a baby's lips to periodically turn blue. This has been happening to my friend's 13 mom son and the doc told her that she needs to get him checked out ASAP. She is really worried. She is as mainstream as they come so he is FF, fully vaxed, etc.

Generally that is a sign that he isn't getting enough oxygen. Not something you can diagnose over the internet. I hope her doctor gave her a referral to a specialist?

he is not getting enough oxygen and this could absolutely be fatal...even if he "seems normal". His organs will slowly start to fail if they don't find a way to get his O2 levels up to a normal level.

Sounds like heart/lungs to me - my sister did that when she was in cogestive heart failure but she ended up staying blue after a while.

You took the words right out of my mouth! He saw the ped today. They did blood work and say that he is fine. They are giving him an EKG tomorrow but suspect that it will also come up normal. They said that b/c he is very fair skin...he may get blue lips easily when cold. This sounds a bit questionable to me and frankly, I am worried for the little guy.

It sounds like they may need to seek a second opinion. That is NOT something I would want my ped to dismiss as a result of having fair skin. I'm pretty sure neither my boyfriend or I ever turned blue as young children and we are just about as white as they come (my boyfriend is the whitest among white redheads!).

Keep us updated, although I would hate for his mother (who I'm sure is worried sick) to think that its her fault for FF'ing her baby.

While this may or may not be true it's not a helpful comment in the least. This woman is worried about her son and for her to possibly come here and read this would be incredibly hurtful. The decisions have been made, there is no point in making her feel like she might have made him ill.

Educating her on the benefits of BF, delayed solids would be great, but this isn't the situation, and your comment is not educational, merely appointing blame.

I would want them to do a pulse oximetry in the very least. Blue lips + baby with asthma, should not be a quick brush off for "he has fair skin."

Agree with that one. I have very, very fair skin and almost never turn blue (occasionally purple when I'm cold). Blue lips isn't cold, it's an oxygenation problem.

Each case is different, I'm sure but....

My dd gets blue lips when she is cold. It's only when she's cold. When she is running around butt naked (because she refuses to put clothes on) and I am cold with sweat pants/shirt on, sometimes her lips turn blue. Around that time, she agrees to put clothes on. *shrugs* It doesn't concern me at all. Her veins are very present throughout her body, her lips are blue and her skin is cold. This has happened periodically for months....when she's naked and cold. (FTR, sometimes I force clothes if it's really cold in the house. But I usually let her happily run around naked because clothes aren't worth the fight).
