My ds LOVES board and card games, so i wanted to get him a new one for christmas. I was thinking a cooperative game would be nice, but i am not too attached to that idea. We already have checkers, chess, parcheesi, monopoly, memory, scrabble, and a few others.

Any recommendations?

When I was a regular babysitter CandyLand was the HUGE hit among most of the kids...It doesn't really take any skill, but they love it.

hmm...I'll do some research and get back to you (I need to start planning for the future anyway) Anything you're particularly against?

The other games my 5yo DS has are: Spiderman Yahtzee and Battleship. Now we just got a game called The Ladybug Game for ages 3-6.. it is really fun and he and his little sister can play together. We also like to play card games.

Take a look at Board Game Geek. They have great reviews to help you find something your kid might like.

My DD (almost 4) loves The Orchard Game from Haba, which is non-competitive. She is also starting to like Gulo Gulo, which many of her 5-y-o friends like.

Rivers, Roads, and Rails is also lots of fun for your DS's age.

My dd started playing UNO at 5. It was her first "grown up" game. We have found though that having a cheap card holder (found practically everywhere) helped out a lot. Depending on your child's skill he may be able to play Guess Who?. Blokus is also tons of fun and my just now 6 year old can play it well (although she is just starting to "get" guess who).

Another favorite is chinese checkers. My kids also LOVE to play trouble, but I do get bored with it. Occassionally it is fine--better than candyland by FAR but still a bit monotonous.

I just purchased Sequence Jr. for my 4 yo. We play it as adults, and love it. The kids one has animals on it. We also have dominoes, there's go fish and old maid cards. There are some great ravensburger games... one called hand in hand, a sock sorting game,

Oh, and there's huballo by cranium...

My DD is 4.5 and we're getting her Blokus for Christmas. Rat-a-tat-cat is the current favorite around here. It's a fun card game with fast rounds and a simple objective- try to get a low score (the cats cards) and get rid of the rats (high cards) with four cards that are turned facedown in front of each player. There are some wild cards to make it exciting and it's been fun to watch her learn strategy. We found it at Target and it wasn't expensive. We also like Sorry and Zingo (which my 2yo can also play).

Son's favorite at that age was The Amazing Labyrinth. We'd change the rules a bit when he was little (5-8, maybe). Instead of him having to get to his items in order, he chose which item he wanted to find next (while the rest of us did ours in order). That evened the playing field pretty well.
