My question is for parents of Autistic children who have had sucess using the CF/GF diet. Have any of you looked into the Body Ecology Diet? I am attempting to find the right plan for my autistic son's dietary needs and there is so much to sort through, and mean while my son is screaming in the background holding his tummy, obviously in pain. His doctors say he has a neuralogic condition, but i say his problems all stem from his gut. I need to know what works for most of you, if not this program then please make some recommendations. Body Ecology seems right because of thier emphisis on GF/CF, restoring and healing the leakey gut, while detoxifing and supporting proper digestion.

We went from gfcf to SCD. Then we moved briefly into a modified SCD leaning toward BED before things finally got sorted out. I tried lots of different diet things because like you I thought my son's issues were food related. He wasn't holding his tummy in pain though.

My son's issues turned out to be food but not in the way I expected (he has a metabolic condition). So every diet I tried did nothing but when we treated the metabolics we finally saw response. I'm not implying your child also has a metabolic condition at all. I'm just saying that sometimes "what it is" isn't the same for different kids on the spectrum.

What are your child's issues? How are stools? Growth? How long were you gluten free? Have you had any tests--particularly for celiac or other GI tests?

Autism and Gut issues are 2 different things. Its not a treatment for Autism. There are dozens of threads about this on the board. GF/CF and other diets can help an Autistic child's system work better and make them healthy, JUST LIKE ANY NT CHILD. Its not a cure or treatment for Autism.

I refuse to even look at that website because thier banner is offensive to me. I don't like thier stance on Autism.

Actually, there is a wave of parents such as myself who are treating the underlying health issues that commonly occur in many ASD children. Throw out the word "cure" for that is not what your are doing. You are simply improving his or her health so he or she is much more receptive to the traditional interventions you are providing. How in the heck can a child learn if they are dealing with gastrointestinal issues, ie constipation or loose stools?

I have not personally tried Body Ecology Diet, but I am definately in the works to try to give my children the cocobiotics. I can't get them to consume the other fermented foods. If you can do it, then definately try it. Body Ecology DIet is not something specific to autism. Many people have deficiencies in the good bacteria in the gut and the diet is a natrual method of replentishing it so your gut can remain healthy and do what it is suppose to do - protect the body, break down foods, effeciently absorb the foods, etc.

If the you can't do the diet - other thing you can try is finding probiotics with several strains of good bacteria.
