Do any of you have a book suggestion that I could buy for my parents who are leary of me homeschooling? I finallly told my mom tonight that I plan to HS the kids next year and she had all the questions that I'm sure you all have had to answer a hundred times. "what about socialization? are you qualified? how will you know they're learning if they aren't being tested? how will you fit a whole days worth of school in with both the kids? how will you teach them both at different ages? what about college, etc, etc, etc" I answered all of her questions as best I knew how and assured her that I'd done my research and that I was doing what I think is best. She told me that she wasn't trying to be insulting, and I actually believe her, but she is concerned that HSing the kids will hold them back. Any suggestions to help ease my poor mother's mind that I'm not going to screw up my kids for life?

I think the only answer to that is time. If she is close by invite her some of the activities or field trips that you may go on. If she is farther away, start a web page to show some of your accomplishments or maybe a newsletter. You can also have the kids start to write to her - one a good way to practice handwriting and writing in general - and she will love to hear from them. Basically keep her informed of all that you do. Your enthusiasm will encourage her and you children will teach her that it is ok.

I suggest Dr. Gordon Neufeld's book "Hold on To Your Kids/Why Parents Matter". It is currently available in Canada, don't think it's being published in the US until Jan05 (under a different title).

There are samples of his philosophies and teachings at: www.gordonneufeld.com

It will definitely show them why sending your kids to school may not be the best option!

What did you think of Neufeld's book? I have read about half of it and have been looking for someone to talk about it with. Should we start a thread on Books, etc.?

Actually haven't read the book yet, I'm waiting for a copy. Have browsed thru it, and read excerpts from it. I also heard him speak at HS convention in BC a few years ago...I really agree with alot of what he has to say!

I happened across your post, and thought I might share my comments on this book, which I posted at http://www.intouch.ca/miniato/neufe...onalReview.html almost a year ago. Great read!
We got The Unschooling Handbook for my dad. He said he has been reading it and agrees with "much" of the things it has to say. lol.. well much is better than none. In any case, at least he knows that unschooling is a real thing that other people actually do with their kids too... not just his crazy daughter lol.
