I hope the link works...
This is a link to a listing of homes in the Metro Providence area, mulitfamily. Providence is much, much cheaper than Metro Boston.

However, as with any city, the quality of the neighborhoods varies. Also, parts of Massachusetts are 4 miles outside Providence, like Seekonk, where I live.

But the link can give you an idea on how much you can expect to spend.
I have no idea on what the cost of the schools are, but Providence Hebrew Day School does have a very good reputation here of being a great school.

Thanks Kerlowyn - We use to live on the East Side of Providence, but we moved to Jersey several years ago. Now an elderly family member has given us a wonderful offer, but we need to work out all the ligistics. She want to move to Boston and our job is to convince her that is not where she wants to move. So, I am on a comparison search of schools and houses. Thanks for the link. It did work.

I need more info on schools. I've done a ton of research on houses. Thanks.

Hi Marcie,

Maimo is 10-12,000/year for the lower grades. In case you were thinking of it, there is a growing Jewish HS community here! We have a Yahoo group--NEJHS (New England Jewish HS'ers)

There isn't a lot of multi-family houses in the area of Brookline that's near the shuls (Newton is similar). The 1/2 of multis that I've seen are in the $400,000 range (we recently saw one for $450,000 that was 1600 sq. feet in an okay area of Brookline [not great, though]--3 br's and 1 bath). For us, it's too much $. If you also have this issue, then Providence is a good bet! In MA, Sharon (which has a big "crunchy" Jewish community and a strong Carlebach minyan) is good although very far from Boston, and Malden is an up-&-coming Orthodox area just north of Boston. They have an eruv that was just completed, and it will probably be the next big Jewish area around here (you can get a nice single family there for in the low 400's. check out www.debontheweb.com to see places)

hth! shana tova!

Thanks for all the info - what does HS mean? Cost will not be an option due to the fact that an elderly family member is going to buy the house and we will be taking care of her. Then we get to keep it when she passes on. YEAH FOR US!! not to be rude though. I guess I will need a listing of streets within the Eruvs. or an eruv map. Does anyone have one they can forward to me?? THis is of course if we can't convince her to stay down in this direction (NJ). We would prefer to stay at this point, but if she insists on moving North, we personnally prefer Providence since we use to live there and have many friends there. We will see what happens. I expect this ordeal to take a year to complete.
